The fatty acid compositions of ceramide and sphingomyelin isolated from the same tissue have been found to differ significantly: palmitic acid is major in the sphingomyetin, oleic acid is major in the ceramide, the sphingomyelin is rich in saturated acids. These differences are typical both of the normal and of the tumor tissues, Sphingoid base composition of ceramide and sphingomyelin isolated from the normal tissue is like: the major component is sphingenine (more 96%). The tumor ceramides contain also significant amounts of sphinganine, but in the tumor sphingomyelin the sphinganine content is much less and depends on tumor type. 收起
