The foundation work of the ashram, a spiritual retreat, was established by Debendranath Tagore, philosopher-father of Rabindranath during 1862-63. He was responsible for the pioneering work of making the barren spread into green. Santiniketan, the guest house building, Upasana Griha and the surrounding built environment, open environmental art into culture of place were designed from 1862-63 and onwards. Art in built environment in all functional forms started flowering in Santiniketan and Sriniketan during the period of Visva-Bharati, with creative unity and innovative ideas of form making. Outstanding talents of East and West joined hands in making the synthesis and unification of the universal learning centre, was conceptualized during 1918.
