'It is suspected that this species, which is common on all the islands, has taken the ecological niche occupied on other coasts by the common periwinkle (Littorina littorea), which is rare everywhere (except Les Minquiers). In the late nineteenth century, Osilinus lineatus was being sold commercially at the Guernsey fish market which, together with its local name of grey winkle, suggests that it was being gathered and eaten in much the same manner as Littorina littorea was in Britain and France.' 收起
