A study was undertaken to assess the root characters, uptake of nutrients and economics of rice as influenced by different establishment methods in Bhadra command area. The investigation consists of six establishment methods viz., zero tillage, aerobic method, system of rice intensification (SRI) method, drum seeding, self propelled mechanical transplanting and hand transplanting. Among different establishment methods, rice cultivation by SRI method recorded significantly higher root length (23.8 cm), root weight (5.4 g/hill), root volume (67.0 cc), uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (253.46, 50.3 and 182.49 kg/ha, respectively), grain yield (5,435 kg/ha), gross return (Rs 46,231/ha), net return (Rs 31705//ha) and B:C ratio (2.18) over other methods of establishment. Significantly lower root length (16.6 cm), root weight (3.0 g/hill), root volume (48.6 cc), uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (131.9, 28.55 and 122.63 kg/ha, respectively), grain yield (4,261 kg/ha), gross return (Rs 36,199/ha), net return (Rs 23,373/ha) and B:C ratio (1.8) were observed in rice established by zero tillage method.
