This subject is especially pertinent in view of the alarming rate at which an ever-increasing global population consumes existing developed resources. The origin and evolution of arid and semi-arid lands are described with emphasis on desert soils and vegetation. Examples of papers on plant resources for the various applications include studies of the jojoba, guayule, and juncus plants, woody plants and fuels from biomass, and salt tolerant crops (the latter harvested for direct human consumption). The workshops comprise research topics together with plant ecology, management, and improvement. 收起
