Established by the NSF Directorate for Engineering in 1985, the ERC Program was charged with a vital mission: strengthening competitiveness by bringing new approaches and goals to academic engineering research and education, and by forging vital new links between universities and industry. The three main elements of this mission are cross-disciplinary research, education, and industrial collaboration and technology transfer.
