This study was conducted to determine the distribution and residual level of arsenic accumulation in different animal tissues and in their products. Muscle tissues of broiler birds, goats and fish were collected from arsenic-prone Kulsur and Hadipur-I gram panchayet in Deganga Block of West Bengal, India. Samples considered as control were collected from Golgram, an unaffected gram panchayet in Debra block of Midnapur district. Higher arsenic residues were found in the thigh muscles of broiler and goat carcasses and in the abdominal muscles of fish. The egg yolk contained more arsenic than the other parts of the egg. Milk showed the least arsenic residues. Although the levels were less than the permissible level, the possibility of long-term exposure leading to chronic arsenic poisoning in humans was emphasized.
