Summarizes that the experiments in La(sub2-x)Sr(sub x)CuO(sub4) provide evidencefor a spatial correlation between the doped holes and the Sr dopants, in addition to the presence of a large hole-lattice coupling only in the vicinity of the Sr dopants. The local structure deviates from the macroscopic, average, structure at x is less than 0.15, indicating the appearance of structural disorder. This disorder is in the form of nanodomains, within which the local tilts are ordered, but tilts become disordered relative to each other in going from one domain to the other. These results indicate that Sr dopants might have a much more significant role in determining normal and superconducting properties La(sub2-x)Sr(sub x)CuO(sub4) than is typically assumed.

In the thesis, (e,e'd) experiments on (4)He, (6)Li, and (12)C, and also a first (e,e'alpha) experiment on (6)Li are described. The aim of these experiments is twofold: to study the mechanism of (e,e'X) reactions and to extract useful spectroscopic information, i.e. the probability to find a cluster X inside a nucleus and the cluster bound-state wave function, from these experiments. Chapter 2 contains a description of the (6)Li(e,e'd)(4)He reaction. Chapter 3 is devoted to the transition in the (12)C(e,e'd) reaction to the isospin forbidden J sup pi = 0(+), T=1 state in (10)B at an excitation energy of 1.74 MeV. In Chapter 4 the mechanism of the (4)He(e,e'd)(2)H reaction is considered. Chapter 5 gives an extensive review of all three (e,e'd) experiments, wherein the mechanism of the (e,e'd) reaction and the extracted spectroscopic results are discussed. As the (6)Li(e,e'alpha) reaction was measured with a special detector, capable of detecting low-energetic particles, the detector is described in Chapter 6. In Chapter 7 the (6)Li(e,e'alpha) reaction is considered. Finally, in Chapter 8 the results of the thesis are discussed.

In this paper it is shown that the density functional theory can be generalized to systems with degenerate excited states. There is a one-to-one map between the subspace, spanned by the ground state and any one of the first degenerate excited states, and the sum of their densities. But only a one way correspondence exists between external potential and subspace, as well as between external potential and the sum of densities. Cyanoacetylene was studied using molecular beam electric resonance spectroscopy. Ground state results are: mu =3.73172 D, eQq=4319.24 kHz, C/sub N/=0.976 kHz. Zero field spectra were observed for the 3 singly excited bending modes and Stark data were taken for the lower energy 2 of these 3 states. Excited state results include nu sub 7 ; mu =3.7225 D, eQq/sub aa/=-4302.0 kHz, eQ(q/sub bb/-q/sub cc/)=-28.8 kHz, C/sub N/(J=2)=1.47 kHz; nu sub 6 ; mu =3.7263 D, eQq/sub aa/=-4369.7 kHz, eQ(q/sub bb/-q/sub cc/)=177.1 kHz, C/sub B/(J=2)=1.30 kHz; nu sub 5 ; eQq/sub aa/=-4325.7, eQ(q/sub bb/-q/sub cc/)=96.8 kHz, C/sub N/(J=2)=1.33 kHz. l-doubling constants were also obtained for the degenerate vibrations. In models of cool stellar atmospheres where molecules are important, molecular spectroscopic data can be used to calculate partition functions, from which equilibrium constants hence abundances can be obtained. In this report, it is shown that simple analytic approximations can be used to calculate very easily the partition functions of diatomic molecules, and comparisons are made for the two particularly important astrophysical molecules, H sub 2 and CO, with other work where the partition functions are calculated by explicitly summing over a very large number of energy levels. It is found that these analytic approximations give excellent agreement with more detailed calculations and are certainly adequate for many purposes. This method is very convenient, as only a few spectroscopic constants are needed, and the analytic formulae are very easily evaluated. (ERA citation 12:026078)
