We have demonstrated that short-term vertical position-specific phoria adaptationcontributes to nonconjugate adaptation of vertical pursuits, but not to nonconjugate adaptation of vertical saccades. Binocular adaptation to multiple stationary vertical disparities resulted in both nonconjugate pursuits and phoria aftereffects but had little effect on the early step component of vertical saccades. Similarly, binocular nonconjugate adaptation of vertical pursuits produced both nonconjugate pursuits and fixation phoria aftereffects. Position-specific adaptation of nonconjugate pursuit was demonstrated by adapting to disparate motion in the upper field which resulted in nonconjugate pursuit aftereffects that were greater in the upper than the lower hemifield. These nonconjugate pursuits were accompanied by position-specific phoria aftereffects, indicating that common mechanisms underlie adaptation of vertical phoria and nonconjugate pursuits.... NASA'S Ames Research Center contracted with SRI international to contract a device that would be able to anticipate, track, and monitor involuntary ocular movement horizontally, vertically, and with respect to depth-of-field. This development helped research institutions to understand the eye. The Eyetracker, manufactured and distributed by Forward Optical Technologies, Inc. is now used in the clinical/medical field.

Fletcher Allen Health Care, Inc. (the Hospital), is a 419-bed teaching hospital located in Burlington, Vermont. The Hospital bills Medicare for the overhead associated with outpatient medical services performed at the Hospital and bills on behalf of its physicians for the professional services that they perform in the Hospitals outpatient settings. Our current review is the result of findings identified in a previous Office of Inspector General (OIG) review at the Hospital that was part of a series of OIG reviews of Medicare payments to hospitals for selected claims for inpatient and outpatient services. In June 2011, we issued a report entitled Medicare Compliance Review of Fletcher Allen Health Care for Calendar Years 2008 and 2009 (A-01-10-00527). We found that the Hospital did not fully comply with Medicare billing requirements for selected outpatient claims for E&M services billed with surgical services. These surgical services included eye injection procedures. Our current audit covered $279,115 in Medicare payments, consisting of $180,910 to the Hospital for 2,871 outpatient hospital E&M services and $98,205 to its physicians for 2,649 corresponding E&M services. The services had dates of service in calendar years (CY) 2008 through 2010. Our objective was to determine whether the Hospital and its physicians complied with Medicare requirements for separately billable E&M services related to outpatient eye injection procedures for CYs 2008 through 2010.

The purpose of this study was to determine the potential irritant effects of PyAOP on the eyes of rabbits. The test article was instilled once into the conjunctiva sac of the right eye of each New Zealand white rabbit as a packed volume of 0.1 ml/eye. Upon instillation, each eye was held closed for approximately 1 second to prevent loss of material. The left eye remained untreated and served as the control. Both eyes of all animals were examined and scored for ocular irritation prior to dosing and 1 hour after dosing. Ocular irritation scores at 1 hour post-dose included sluggish reaction of iris to light, beefy red conjunctivae, swelling of eye lids and discharge. Based on mortality observed for five animals, positive ocular scores, and as suggested by Calvert's Department of laboratory and Animal Medicine, the study Director requested the remaining animal be euthanized on Day 2. Based on the observations made in this study, PyAOP was determined to be a very severe irritant (Class 7) according to the Modified Kay and Calandra Interpretation of Eye Irritation Test (Table 3), as well as ocularly toxic when dosed as received.

The embryonic optic cup consists of two layers. The inner layer consists of the presumptive neural retina and nonpigmented layer of the ciliary epithelium. The outer layer comprises the presumptive retinal pigmented epithelium and the pigmented layer of the ciliary epithelium. The pigmented and nonpigmented layers of the ciliary epithelium begin to differentiate ultrastructurally from the adjacent retinal pigmented epithelium and neural retina, respectively, by day four of development. By the sixth day of development, the pigmented and nonpigmented layers of the ciliary epithelium have acquired the morphological characteristics of fluid and electrolyte transporting cells. It is possible that the cells of the ciliary epithelium are secreting embryonic aqueous humor and are responsible, at least in part, for intraocular pressure in the chicken embryo.

Purpose: The fat sand rat, Psammomys obsess, a spontaneous model for Type2 diabetes, develops cataracts within days of the onset of clinical diabetes. The purpose of this research was to determine the crystallin composition of the normal sand rat lens and determine the changes that occur during diabetic cataract formation.
