The data dictionary system is an important tool for supporting information resource management. It facilitates the management and control of data. This thesis will develop a relational model of a data dictionary and implement it on the ORACLE relational data base management system. Then, this data dictionary model will be implemented using the logic-oriented Prolog language. The Prolog model of a data dictionary will demonstrate that logic programming can be used for relational data base applications and that it provides more powerful dictionary capabilities than the relational model. Keywords: Expert Systems.

Knowledge engineering or expert systems is needed in biofuel systems to adequately prioritize wood energy crop traits on which research and development should focus. Objectives at the various stages of the total biofuel process are clarifying the demands that will be placed on feedstock qualities. These objectives are forming more clearly from developments in the growing, handling, and conversion of wood under operational and regulatory circumstances. A process for systematic prioritization of wood qualities for possible improvement is presented in the content of the entire biofuel process.

MPROLOG is used to implement the expert system discussed in this paper. A description of the expert system, a F-111 Wing Commander Consultant , and its implementation, starting with the knowledge acquisition and design phases, are discussed in part 2. The problems encountered developing the expert system and problems due to MPROLOG are also presented. Finally, an evaluation of MPROLOG as an expert system development tool will make up part 3.

An expert system prototype has been developed to support system analysis activities at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for waste management tasks. This expert system will aid in prioritizing radioactive waste streams for treatment and disposal by evaluating the severity and treatability of the problem as well as the final waste form. The objectives of the expert system development included: (1) collecting information on process treatment technologies for liquid low-level waste (LLLW) that can be incorporated in the knowledge base of the expert system, and (2) producing a prototype that suggests processes and disposal technologies for the ORNL LLLW system. The concept under which the expert system has been designed is integration of knowledge. There are many sources of knowledge (data bases, text files, simulation programs, etc.) that an expert would regularly consult in order to solve a problem of liquid waste management. The expert would normally know how to extract the information from these different sources of knowledge. The general scope of this project would be to include as much pertinent information as possible within the boundaries of the expert system. As a result, the user, who may not be an expert in every aspect of liquid waste management, may be able to apply the content of the information to a specific waste problem. This paper gives the methodological steps to develop the expert system under this general framework.

It has been estimated that as much as 60% of the energy used to heat, cool, and illuminate buildings could be saved through better design. Although energy standards provide a benchmark against which designers may measure their designs, compliance evaluation often requires tedious calculation. We are building a computer program, the Energy Standards Intelligent Design Tool (ES-IDT), that addresses these issues. The ES-IDT automatically and continually evaluates a building design as it is being developed on a CAD system. If the emerging design begins to deviate from compliance with ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1989, the ES-IDT notifies the architect, indicating which section of the standard was violated and what design decision(s) caused the violation. The ES-IDT also will suggest some design options to improve the energy efficiency of the building.

A neural network is a data processing system consisting of a number of simple, highly interconnected processing elements in an architecture inspired by the structure of the cerebral cortex portion of the brain. Hence, neural networks are often capable of doing things which humans or animals do well but which conventional computers often do poorly. Neural networks have emerged in the past few years as an area of unusual opportunity for research, development and application to a variety of real world problems. Indeed, neural networks exhibit characteristics and capabilities not provided by any other technology. Examples include reading Japanese Kanji characters and human handwriting, reading a typewritten manuscript aloud, compensating for alignment errors in robots, interpreting very ''noise'' signals (e.g. electroencephalograms), modeling complex systems that cannot be modelled mathematically, and predicting whether proposed loans will be good or fail. This paper presents a brief tutorial on neural networks and describes research on the potential applications to nuclear power plants.

High energy particle experiments require an accelerator as a source of high energy particles. To increase the productivity of an accelerator facility, we wish to develop an expert system to control beam lines. Expert Systems are a branch of Artificial Intelligence where a computer program performs tasks requiring human expertise. Unlike most expert systems we have a physical model underlying our beam line and this model can be used with the expert system to improve performance. The development of the expert system will lead to an increased understanding of the beam line as well as the possibility of state-of-the-art expert system building. (ERA citation 11:009592)

This is the final report of a two-year, Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). A method was developed to incorporate learning and adaptive capabilities into traditional rule-based descriptions of environments. The learning and adapting capacity is critical to robot programming in highly unstructured and variable environments such as the operation of robots in gloveboxes. The technology is based on a hybrid expert system technology, called expert networks, and was developed with the associated knowledge capture techniques.

The Technology Information Systems (TIS) Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, jointly sponsored by several government agencies, has implemented a new approach to systems interconnection and user interfaces. The ''Intelligent Gateway Processor'' (IGP) is an integrated package designed to provide a single user interface to a variety of systems, automate access to information resources, and provide audit logging and authorization controls. The IGP software is UNIX-based, but the IGP approach is applicable to any heterogeneous environment. This paper discusses the implementation of the IGP software: why UNIX was chosen (and retained); the role of the individual IGP modules; how they were written to fit into (and improve on) the UNIX concept; and plans for the future of the IGP concept. 9 refs.
