Because of the importance of the information superhighway, GAO initiated work toidentify the socioeconomic regulatory, and technical issues associated with this initiative in detail. GAO summarized these issues in a prior report (N95-18914/8). This current report focuses in more depth on the pivotal technical issues--security and privacy, interoperability, and reliability. Failure by the private and public sectors to address these challenges could adversely affect the future of the emerging information superhighway.
