After more than 20 years from vision to reality active electronically scanned array (AESA) antennas reached a mature level. Improved antenna and system performances, high flexibility by modular and scalable architectures as well as related technologies are success factors for military and commercial applications. Significant cost reduction efforts have to be performed in order to accelerate the change to this antenna generation. To overcome this problem emerging technologies and advanced architectures are anticipated and will pave the way for highly sophisticated antenna performances and multi-functional sensors. This paper presents a general view on the AESA technology with reference to representative examples.

Antenna architectures based on active aperiodic arrays are considered a promising solution for multibeam transmit antenna embarked on board Earth orbiting satellites. Active aperiodic arrays with equiamplitude excitation represent an alternative to active periodic arrays with tapered amplitude excitation. The paper will offer a preliminary trade-off between the two configurations from a system level perspective.

In this paper, a novel spatial modulation (SM) scheme is proposed based on the constellation's set-partitioning. Specifically, the original digital constellation is divided into two sub-sets with each one having enlarged Euclidean distance between pair of constellation points. And the new SM transmission will activate two transmit antennas at the same time, and the digital modulation symbols from two activated antennas should be selected from two different partitioned sub-constellations, respectively. Analysis and simulation results show that the SER performance of the novel SM scheme could be improved greatly comparing with the traditional SM schemes. Moreover, the new SM scheme could weaken the limitations of the total number of transmit antennas.
