The Hawai'i Audubon Society (HAS) was founded in 1939 as an independent, nonprofit membership association dedicated to the protection of Hawaii's native wildlife and habitats through education, science and advocacy. Current membership consists of approximately 1721 individuals and institutions and operates in accordance with a constitution and by-laws under the supervision of a Board of Directors elected by the members. In 1978 HAS was named a certified chapter of the National Audubon Society, while continuing to function independently in all fiscal, policy and programmatic matters. An office manager; an aquatics programs director, and several independent contractors provide administrative and professional services for HAS, but many necessary tasks and responsibilities are accomplished through the efforts of dedicated volunteers statewide. HAS publishes the 'Elepaio, a peer-reviewed journal, and operates two websites: www.hawaiiaudubon.com and www.pacfish.org. It is my privilege, as the current President of the Society, to offer the following review of the past year's activities and our principal goals for the coming year.

This study analyzes U.S. union organizing activity and membership growth from 1990 to 2004, a period in which an overall pattern of union decline continued and in which organizing achieved renewed prominence as both a union policy and public policy issue. Models for organizing activity and membership growth were proposed and tested. Union decentralization and employer opposition were found to be key predictors of organizing activity differences among unions. These same factors, along with organizing activity, helped explain union differences in membership growth, as did a “Sweeney era” effect.

Abstract We resolve the open problem posed by Arbitman, Naor, and Segev [FOCS 2010] of designing a dynamic dictionary for multisets in the following setting: (1) The dictionary supports multiplicity queries and allows insertions and deletions to the multiset. (2) The dictionary is designed to support multisets of cardinality at most n (i.e., including multiplicities). (3) The space required for the dictionary is (1+o(1))·nlogun+Θ(n)\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$(1+o(1))\cdot n\log \frac{u}{n} + \varTheta (n)$$\end{document} bits, where u denotes the cardinality of the universe of the elements. This space is 1+o(1)\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$1+o(1)$$\end{document} times the information-theoretic lower bound for static dictionaries over multisets of cardinality n if u=ω(n)\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$u=\omega (n)$$\end{document}. (4) All operations are completed in constant time in the worst case with high probability in the word RAM model. A direct consequence of our construction is the first dynamic counting filter (i.e., a dynamic data structure that supports approximate multiplicity queries with a one-sided error) that, with high probability, supports operations in constant time and requires space that is 1+o(1)\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$1+o(1)$$\end{document} times the information-theoretic lower bound for filters plus O(n) bits. The main technical component of our solution is based on efficiently storing variable-length bounded binary counters and its analysis via weighted balls-into-bins experiments in which the weight of a ball is logarithmic in its multiplicity.

Although membership changes within teams are a common practice, research into this phenomenon is relatively nascent (Summers et al.; Acad Manag J 55:314-338, 2012). The small literature base, however, does provide insight into skills required for effective adaptation. The purpose of this effort is to provide a brief research synopsis, leading to research hypotheses about medical team training. By generalizing previous scientific findings regarding skills required for effective membership adaptation in different kinds of teams, we posit mechanisms whereby teamwork training might also support adaptation among medical teams (Burke et al.; Qual & Saf Health Care 13:i96-i104, 2004 and Salas et al.; Theor Issues Ergon Sci 8: 381-394, 2007). We provide an overview of the membership change literature. Drawing upon literature from both within and outside of the medical domain, we suggest a framework and research propositions to aid in research efforts designed to determine the best content for helping to create adaptable medical teams through team training efforts. For effective adaptation, we suggest ad hoc teams should be trained on generalizable teamwork skills, to share just "enough" and the "right" information, to engage in shared leadership, and to shift from explicit to implicit coordination. Our overarching goal was to present what is known from the general research literature on successful team adaptation to membership changes, and to propose a research agenda to evaluate whether findings generalize to member changes in medical teams.

In this article, a method has been developed to construct the membership surfaces of row and column vectors of an imprecise matrix. A matrix with imprecise elements would be called an imprecise matrix. Nothing however is available in the literature about the membership surface when an imprecise matrix is defined. In this article, the authors have shown the row and column membership surfaces of imprecise matrix and demonstrated with the help of real life example.

In fuzzy logic, an imprecise ("fuzzy") property is described by its membership function μ(x), i.e., by a function which describes, for each real number x, to what degree this real number satisfies the desired property. In principle, membership functions can be of different shape, but in practice, trapezoidal and triangular membership functions are most frequently used. In this paper, we provide an interval-based theoretical explanation for this empirical fact.

Thresholding is one of the important steps in image analysis process and used extensively in different image processing techniques. Medical image segmentation plays a very important role in surgery planning, identification of tumours, diagnosis of organs, etc. In this article, a novel approach for medical image segmentation is proposed using a hybrid technique of genetic algorithm and fuzzy logic. Fuzzy logic can handle uncertain and imprecise information. Genetic algorithms help in global optimization, gives good results in noisy environments and supports multi-objective optimization. Gaussian, trapezoidal and triangular membership functions are used separately for calculating the entropy and finding the fitness value. CPU time, Root Mean Square Error, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy are calculated using the three membership functions separately at threshold levels 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9. MRI images are considered for applying the proposed method and the results are analysed. The experimental results obtained prove the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

The paper uses a gravity trade model to examine the impact of corruption on bilateral trade using a data set comprising OECD economies, new EU members and developing nations. Although the level of corruption of both the importing and exporting nations does hinder cross-border transactions, differences between their ethical standards do have a negative impact on trade flows. The model is used to assess the impact on exports and imports of Romania and Bulgaria joining the European Union.
