This paper examines why Technical Education (TE) teachers are unwilling to use the recently provided online platform. TE teachers studied include Technical Instructors and Lecturers. This research examined the personal, attitudinal, institutional and societal challenges behind TE teachers’ reluctance to the use of the online platform. This study was carried out in Nigeria. A structured questionnaire-based on the objectives of the study was administered to all TE teachers who are supposed to be using online platforms for delivering their courses. The findings include among others: the inhibition rate of societal challenges is greater for Technical Instructors and women than for Lecturers and men; personality and attitudinal challenges have more inhibiting effect for Technical Instructors as well as senior Academics.

Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) is a community-driven, National Science Foundation-sponsored research program investigating the physics of the Earth's magnetosphere and its coupling to the solar wind and the atmosphere. This commentary provides an introduction to a Special Issue collating recent studies related to a GEM Challenge on kinetic plasma processes in the dayside magnetosphere during southward interplanetary magnetic field conditions.We also recount our experiences of organizing such a collaborative activity, where modelers and observers compare their results, that is, of the human side of bringing researchers together.We give suggestions on planning, managing, funding, and documenting these activities, which provide valuable opportunities to advance the field.

A mouse model for Chlamydia suis genital infection was developed. Ninety-nine mice were randomly divided into three groups and intravaginally inoculated with chlamydia: 45 mice (group 1) received C. suis purified elementary bodies (EBs), 27 (group 2) were inoculated with C. trachomatis genotype E EBs and 27 mice (group 3) with C. trachomatis genotype F EBs. Additionally, 10 mice were used as a negative control. At seven days post-infection (dpi) secretory anti-C. suis IgA were recovered from vaginal swabs of all C. suis inoculated mice. Chlamydia suis was isolated from 93, 84, 71 and 33% vaginal swabs at 3, 5, 7 and 12 dpi. Chlamydia trachomatis genotype E and F were isolated from 100% vaginal swabs up to 7 dpi and from 61 and 72%, respectively, at 12 dpi. Viable C. suis and C. trachomatis organisms were isolated from uterus and tubes up to 16 and 28 dpi, respectively. The results of the present study show the susceptibility of mice to intravaginal inoculation with C. suis. A more rapid course and resolution of C. suis infection, in comparison to C. trachomatis, was highlighted. The mouse model could be useful for comparative investigations involving C. suis and C. trachomatis species.

Keen students of the Challenger Expedition (1872–1876) may know that it was responsible for the discovery of manganese nodules – concretions of iron and manganese oxides that also contain significant amounts of other metals, which deep-sea mining companies have wanted to exploit since huge fields of them were found in the Pacific in the 1960s. The initial discovery occurred in February 1873, when HMS Challenger dredged up ‘a number of very peculiar black oval bodies' from a depth of 2435 fathoms in the western North Atlantic, close to 21° N, 50° W. The Expedition's chemist, John Young Buchanan, analysed one of the ‘oval bodies' and found that it consisted of ‘almost pure peroxide of manganese'. The scientists were struck by similarities between this and a concretion which a few weeks earlier had been dredged up, with a black coral attached, from a depth of 1530 fathoms in an area we now know as the Canary Island Seamount Province. Charles Wyville Thomson, the chief scientist, included a description of the ‘base of the black coral' (along with other mainly biological information) in the first of his ‘Notes from the "Challenger"' published in Nature on 8 May 1873; the ‘oval bodies' were described in the second of these ‘Notes', a week later. Preliminary reports concerning the numerous later findings of nodules (with nuclei) and crusts (with no nuclei) were published in the prestigious Proceedings of the Royal Society of London in 1875–1876 and 1876.

The endocrine control mechanisms for female mammalian aggression have been largely unstudied. Although it has been proposed that androgens may modulate female aggressive behavior in a similar manner to males, very little conclusive evidence exists. Previous work in male marmosets found that post-encounter increases in testosterone (T) were dependent on the intensity of aggression displayed during the aggressive encounter. We exposed female marmosets (Callithrix kuhlii), a monogamous and biparental primate, to aggressive interactions with unfamiliar intruders. Individual female marmosets exhibited changes in T and estradiol (E_2) that are associated with aggressiveness dependent on the intensity of aggression displayed as well as their role during the encounter. Resident females exhibited increased E_2 immediately following an encounter in which they displayed high rates of aggression. If resident females received high rates of aggression from the intruder, the resident displayed increased T 24hr following the encounter. Interestingly, if the female was an intruder in the encounter, the intensity of her aggression was associated with increased cortisol immediately following the trials, whereas received aggression was associated with increased T and E_2 immediately following the trial. Female primates do exhibit situation-dependent changes in gonadal steroids in association with aggression that may serve to prime them for future aggressive interactions.
