Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to transform its shape, adapt, and develop a new neuronal connection provided with a new stimulus. The stronger the electrical stimulation, the robust is the transformation. Neurogenesis is a complex process when the new neuronal blast cells present in the dentate gyrus divide in the hippocampus. We collected articles from the past 11 years for review, using the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) strategy from PubMed. Quality appraisal was done for each research article using various assessment tools. A total of 24 articles were chosen, applying all the mentioned inclusion and exclusion criteria and reviewed. The reviewed studies emphasized that modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise should be implemented as an intervention in the elderly for healthy aging of the brain, as the world's aging population is going to be increased, leading to the expansion of health care and cost. Multiple studies have publicized the relation of diet and exercise with cognition function in aging people. A diet consisting of curcumin in its food has its anti-oxidative property, which prevents rapid aging of the brain, other diet patterns such as a caloric restriction diet can influence brain plasticity and preclude the decline of memory. Exercise can increase brain-derived growth factor (BDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), synapsin one, and tyrosine kinase activity that can expand the size of the brain, enhance the plasticity and neurogenesis. This review aimed at exploring lifestyle factors that contribute to neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. Thus, providing a new path for clinicians and researchers to map out the future possible significant benefits for optimal brain aging in a healthy fashion.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is progressive wear and tear disease that affects multiple joints, including knees, hips, and spine. OA causes structural damage to joints. Although hypertension, type II diabetes, and hyperlipidemia have a silent effect, for the most part, the addition of osteoarthritis has a limiting and debilitating impact on patients. Common symptoms of OA include joint pain, joint swelling, limitations in range of motion that is impacting one’s quality of life. The question being investigated in this systematic review is whether hyperlipidemia or the use of statin has any effect on osteoarthritis and progression of osteoarthritis. This systematic review of 13 articles was done to explore if there is an effect of hyperlipidemia and statin use on the progression of osteoarthritis. This study included 6,974,538 total participants. Eight studies out of the 13 investigated the effect of statin use. Out of the 13 articles, five studies investigated the impact of lipid levels on OA. The total participants cannot be divided into statin users and non-users because some studies did not divide the participants into two groups. Studies that investigated the effect of lipid levels on OA were studied based on age. Some included only women in their study, and one study was solely conducted in the military population. Therefore, these studies cannot be divided based on age. Further research is needed to significantly conclude either the positive or negative correlation of hyperlipidemia and statin use on osteoarthritis and its progression.

Migraine and other types of headaches have several symptoms associated with them. The association between migraine and dementia has been considered. It is a topic of discussion and appears to be multifactorial. Dementia is a cluster of symptoms, with memory loss and cognitive dysfunction being the prominent symptoms. In this review, we discussed the association of headache and cognitive dysfunction in a broader context and how the practiced treatment of headaches may silently lead to dementia. We conducted a thorough literature search using PubMed as our main database. The articles exploring the association between headache (both migraine and non-migraine) and dementia were included. Some risk factors like migraine-induced stroke and inherent vascular diseases in migraine patients channeling to stroke and dementia were not considered. A total of 28 studies were included for review. All the reviewed studies put together showed an association between headache and cognitive dysfunction of any form. They showed that the frequency and duration of headache is a determinant for dementia. Few studies also focused on how treating headaches with certain drugs can lead to dementia. The reviewed published literature showed that headaches of any sort and their treatment are potentially linked to dementia. Not all headache patients will require medical treatment, as the benefit might outweigh the risk sometimes. It is interim to understand these facts and formulate a better protocol for treating headache patients. However, due to some discordant results, further studies are needed.

Many rock fractures are entirely driven open by fluids such as ground water, geothermal water, gas, oil, and magma. These are a subset of extension fractures (mode I cracks; e.g., dikes, mineral veins and joints) referred to as hydrofractures. Field measurements show that many hydrofractures have great variations in aperture. However, most analytical solutions for fracture displacement and stress fields assume the loading to be either constant or with a linear variation. While these solutions have been widely used, it is clear that a fracture hosted by heterogeneous and anisotropic rock is normally subject to loading that is neither constant nor with a linear variation. Here we present new general solutions for the displacement and stress fields around hydrofractures, modelled as two-dimensional elastic cracks, opened by irregular overpressure variations given by the Fourier cosine series. Each solution has two terms. The first term gives the displacement and stress fields due to the average overpressure acting inside the crack; it is given by the initial term of the Fourier coefficients expressing the overpressure variation. The second term gives the displacement and stress fields caused by the overpressure variation; it is given by general terms of the Fourier coefficients and solved through numerical integration. Our numerical examples show that the crack aperture variation closely reflects the overpressure variation. Also, that the general displacement and stress fields close to the crack follow the overpressure variation but tend to be more uniform far from the crack. The present solutions can be used to estimate the displacement and stress fields around any fluid-driven crack, that is, any hydrofracture, as well as its aperture, provided the variation in overpressure can be described by Fourier series. The solutions add to our understanding of local stresses, displacements, and fluid transport associated with hydrofractures in the crust.

Obesity has been defined as the excessive deposition of fats on the body. It presents a very significant risk to humanity, with debilitating consequences for healthcare systems worldwide. It has multiple effects on the body, including grave consequences on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Our project explores the latter. There are multiple studies available in the scientific literature that attempt to explain this phenomenon, all with limited success and conflicting results. This cross-sectional exploration of the topic was done on medical undergraduates to pick up on any correlations between peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and the markers of obesity (body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), and waist to hip ratio (WHR)). In general, we found that male participants had sizably higher PEFR values than females (r=0.540, p<0.01). Appropriate BMI is mandatory for the physiologic functioning of the human body. This work also statistically demonstrates a negative overall correlation between lung health and various parameters of obesity. Our work suggests a positive correlation between WHR and PEFR (r=0.325, p<0.01), BMI and PEFR (r=0.573, p=0.02), along with weight and PEFR (r=0.464, p<0.01). Maintaining a BMI and WHR in the normal range is essential for optimal physiological functioning and physical well-being.

The search for pharmacological approaches to neoplastic disease has made some impressive gains started after 1940 when the antileukemic activity of nitrogen mustard was discovered during world war II. It is generally accepted that neoplastic transformation is related to genes alteration or oncogene activation, so the progress in the development of the new drugs for treatment of malignant diseases has been rapid, both in revealing pathobiology of the diseases and discovery of new drugs. In addition attempts have been made to define optimal combinations, treatment strategies and patient support measures. Cancer chemotherapy is now of established value and a highly specialized field. Among the modifications to the family of antitumor compounds, heterocyclic organic compounds have been extensively applied by many groups in order to modify the reactivity profile. Pyrrole, pyrimidine, indole, quinoline and purine are few classes of heterocycles which showed interesting cytotoxicity profiles. The updated material related to these modifications has been rationalized and ordered, in order to offer an overview of the argument.

Atomically thin crystals may exhibit peculiar dispersive electronic states equivalent to free charged particles of ultralight to ultraheavy masses. A rare coexistence of linear and parabolic dispersions yields correlated charge density modes exploitable for nanometric light confinement. Here, we use a time-dependent density-functional approach, under several levels of increasing accuracy, from the random-phase approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter equation formalism, to assess the role of different synthesized germanene samples as platforms for these plasmon excitations. In particular, we establish that both freestanding and some supported germenene monolayers can sustain infrared massless modes, resolved into an out-of-phase?(optical) and an in-phase?(acoustic) component. We further indicate precise experimental geometries that naturally host infrared massive modes, involving two different families of parabolic charge carriers. We thus show that the interplay of the massless and massive plasmons can be finetuned by applied extrinsic conditions or geometry deformations, which constitutes the core mechanism of germanene-based optoelectronic and plasmonic applications.

The Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in 1994 defined strategies and goals for advancing reproductive health and rights that are still far from being reached in Latin America. This paper will use elements of a framework developed by Gruskin et al 1 that analyses the interconnected factors affecting the sexual and reproductive health of people living with HIV. We use and adapt some of these elements to examine the extent to which sexual and reproductive rights have been realized in Latin America since 1994. Specifically, we consider the rights, needs and aspirations of people; the socioeconomic context; national and international law and policy; health systems, services and programmes; the opposition; the perceived high costs of political support; the role of civil society, NGO networks and coalitions; and development aid, donor policy and government funding. There are a growing number of progressive regional and national bodies, organizations, groups and individuals with a commitment to sexual and reproductive health and rights in the region, and many gains have been made in the realization of these rights. However, these gains are only partial, given the acute inequality across ethnic, socioeconomic and geographic lines, and there is evidence of widening gaps. Given the breadth of the subject and the number of countries involved, this paper can cite only a few of the enormous number of examples from the literature. We hope the paper will stimulate further in-depth, critical reviews of these issues at the country and regional level.

Psoriasis is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin condition in which flares are commonly associated with stress. One important non-pharmacological method for managing stress in patients with psoriasis is mindfulness and/or meditation. The objective of this review is to provide an update on research studies investigating the role of mindfulness and meditation in treating psoriasis symptoms, severity, and quality of life. Of six randomized control trials (RCTs) identified, five demonstrated improvement in self-administered psoriasis area and severity index (saPASI) after 8 or 12?weeks of guided meditation. One RCT and one non-randomized control trial reported mental health benefits in psoriasis patients following guided meditation. These results suggest that meditation can be used as a tool to improve both psoriasis skin severity and patient quality of life in the short term. More research is needed to evaluate the effect of meditation on psoriasis severity and quality of life in the long term.

Viral infections, alcohol, hepatic steatosis, autoimmunity medications and herbal supplements are common etiologies of hepatitis. Khat (Catha Edulis) is a commonly used recreational substance in East African and Middle Eastern countries. Khat has been reported in the literature to be associated with hepatotoxicity, which can present in several forms, including chronic liver disease. The possible pathogenesis of liver injury could be secondary to biochemical components of Khat itself or additives such as pesticides or preservatives. An autoimmune mechanism of liver injury has also been postulated, supported by sparse evidence. We present a case of a Yemeni immigrant with acute hepatitis whose fear about social norms and breaching confidentiality made it challenging to identify Khat as being the underlying cause. A 34-year-old man from Yemen presented with right upper quadrant pain of one day duration. He had predominantly elevated transaminases with mild elevation in bilirubin. His investigations were negative for the viral, metabolic or biliary etiology. A persistent focus on clinical history and the well-established physician–patient relationship revealed a history of Khat use. The liver biopsy finding of lobular hepatitis was compatible with drug-induced liver injury and established the finding of Khat hepatotoxicity. Subsequently, the patient improved with conservative management.
