Purpose The study adopts congruence theory to explore the structure of inter-organizational compatibility and its structural effects on knowledge transfer in cross-border merger and acquisitions (M&As). Design/methodology/approach This paper built a moderated-mediation model that presented the relationship between inter-organizational compatibility and knowledge transfer. Regression analysis was conducted with 182 samples from China to examine the model and hypotheses. Findings The results indicate that inter-organizational compatibility is a four-dimensional construct comprising culture, strategy, routine and knowledge. Additionally, inter-organizational compatibility has structural effects on knowledge transfer. Specifically, routine compatibility mediates the relationships between cultural compatibility and knowledge transfer and between strategic compatibility and knowledge transfer. Moreover, the mediating roles are moderated by knowledge compatibility. Originality/value This study updates the construct and provides a comprehensive and fresh understanding of inter-organizational compatibility. We study environments with m homogenous items and two bidders, where the private information of each bidder consists of a monotone valuation (multi-unit auctions). We analyze ex-post implementable social choice functions where the dominant strategy of a bidder is to reveal his valuation. A result by Green and Laffont implies that an efficient outcome can only be ex-post implemented by VCG payments. However, the VCG mechanism has well-known drawbacks, such as low revenue and computational intractability. Thus we seek alternatives by allowing approximate efficiency instead of full efficiency. We exhibit a new family of auctions: for every ε > 0 there exists an ex-post implementable social choice function of this family that is not of the VCG family, yet the value of the selected allocation is always within a multiplicative factor of (1 + ε) of the value of efficient allocation. We term these auctions triage auctions. We then proceed to characterizing ex-post implementable social choice functions that are approximately efficient. For the case of two-item two-bidder auctions, we show that triage auctions are the only scalable ex-post implementable social choice functions that always output a solution with value greater than half of the value of the efficient allocation. "Scalable" means that the allocation does not depend on the units (the "currency") in which the valuations are measured. We use the two-item characterization to provide an almost complete description of all scalable ex-post implementable social choice functions for any number of items and show that they usually identify with triage auctions.

A new and simple concept is proposed for the systematic and quantitative assessment of the technical, economic and ecological aspects of the ecological compatibility of materials and products. This concept can serve for prospective accounting of eco-compatibility in research and development, and for comparisons of alternative technological solutions. It is based on considering six stages of the life cycle and six efficiency parameters for each stage. The ensuing matrix elements can be selected for qualitative or quantitative analysis. The elementary quantitative treatment is based on suitably defined efficiency parameters. This concept alleviates the treatment of a complete life cycle analysis and inventory computation and is particularly useful when a simple and yet concise insight into selected aspects of eco-compatibility of a material or product is required. Economical aspects are introduced regarding minimum energy and material requirements and as a cost difference parameter in comparative treatments. Examples are given to demonstrate the appropriate selection of aspect to be analysed for a particular assessment and to introduce the specific formulation of pertinent efficiency parameters. Thus, the simplicity and transparency of the method and its results is demonstrated.

A deterioration in information-processing performance is commonly recognized in patients with chronic schizophrenia. Although the enhancement of cognitive skills in patients with schizophrenia is important, the types of external stimuli that influence performance have not received much attention. The aim of present study was to clarify the effects of spatial and affordance compatibility in patients with schizophrenia, compared with those in healthy people. The subjects (25 patients with schizophrenia and 25 healthy controls) participated in two experiment examining the effects of the spatial location of stimuli and the action-relevance of objects. The results showed that the effect of spatial compatibility was similar in both the patients and the controls, whereas the influence of action-relevant objects was not highlighted in either patients with chronic schizophrenia or healthy controls. These findings provide important evidence of a normal spatial compatibility effect in patients with chronic schizophrenia. However, further research examining the affordance compatibility effect is needed, taking into consideration the symptomatology and the severity of the social functioning level in patients with schizophrenia.

Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] and sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) are now being bred to enhance the quantity and quality of biomass while maintaining or improving biotic and abiotic stress tolerances. Introgression of complementary traits between sorghum and sugarcane may be an important tool for breeders as they work toward these objectives. We show that by using a sorghum line with the lap mutant, intergeneric Sorghum bicolor x Saccharum spp. hybrids can be readily produced. Using Tx3361 as sorghum seed parent, 14,141 seed were produced from 252 sorghum x Saccharum spp. crosses. Seed set frequency in the intergeneric crosses was affected by sugarcane pollinators. The best pollinators had an above average pollen rating and favorable genetic and/or genomic compatibility, implying that breeding and selection of sugarcane pollen parents could further enhance successful hybridization. Avoiding vivipary through premature seed harvest and eliminating a physical barrier by removing the seed coat increased seedling recovery rates from 1.5 to 33%. Using these methods, our programs have grown 1371 sorghum saccharum intergeneric hybrid plants. Sufficient quantities of seedlings were produced to impose selection criteria with the goal of developing a new intergeneric cultivar with potential to be used for sugar or as a biomass feedstock.

The genus Armillaria includes harmful fungal pathogens that cause root rot and wood decay in a broad range of host plants throughout the world. The aim of this study was to detect, by means of Random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) markers, the level of intraspecific variability within isolates of an Armillaria gallica population sampled from a Quercus spp. stand located in Gravina in Puglia, southern Italy. UPGMA cluster analysis of RAPD profiles generated by decamer primers grouped the isolates in subclusters demonstrating relatively low intraspecific genetic variability. Moreover, RAPD pattern analysis yielded clusters which did not correspond to the groups discriminated by vegetative compatibility tests performed by a previous investigation on the same population. The findings of this research pose the question of whether somatic incompatibility, which involves an undefined number of genes and alleles per gene, might still be considered an effective tool for the epidemiological studies of A. gallica, whereas molecular analyses are more useful for assessing genomic variation within the species.

Star-shaped PLA-heparin (sPLA-Hep) was prepared by coupling heparin to the star-shaped PLA (sPLA) reaction using carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) chemistry. Hydroxyl groups of sPLA were activated by CDI for the reaction with the remained amino-terminal groups of heparin. The surface heparin content of sPLA-Hep was measured to be 1.43 mu g/cm~2. sPLA-Hep-coated surface has shown higher hydrophilicity than control surface. The clotting time of sPLA-Hep measured by activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) was significantly prolonged when compared with sPLA and linear PLA-Hep. sPLA-Hep surface demonstrated lower protein adsorption and platelet adhesion than control sPLA surface. In addition, fibroblast culture on the sPLA-Hep surface showed the enhanced cell spreading area compared with the sPLA surface. Obtained results suggest that the incorporation of heparin to sPLA is effective in curtailing the surface induced-thrombosis and in manipulating the cell interaction. sPLA-Hep could be applied as blood/tissue compatible biodegradable materials for implantable medical devices and tissue engineering.
