Three F8–derived breeding lines W6 26740 (RIL 846_34; GP-96, PI 652444), W6 26743 (RIL 846_40; GP-97, PI 652445), and W6 26745 (RIL 847_36; GP-98, PI 652446) of green pea (Pisum sativum L.), selected from a recombinant inbred line population developed by the USDA–ARS in 2002, are unique in combining high levels of resistance to Fusarium root rot [caused by Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc. f. sp. pisi (F.R. Jones) W.C. Snyder & H.N. Hans.] with acceptable agronomic traits. They will be useful as a resource for developing root rot resistant green pea cultivars. The parentage of W6 26740, W6 26743, and W6 26745 is a cross between ‘Dark Skin Perfection’/90-2131 made in 1994 at Pullman, WA. Dark Skin Perfection is a freezing and canning cultivar characterized by straight, blunt, green, double pods; it was used by pea breeders in the 1950s as a source of resistance to Fusarium wilt race 1 [caused by F. oxysporum Schlecht. f. sp. pisi (van Hall) Snyd. & Hans]. 90-2131 is a germplasm release characterized by white flowers, green cotyledons, a clear seed coat, a black hilum and dimpled seed. This line has partial resistance to Aphanomyces root rot (caused by Aphanomyces euteiches Drechs.), Fusarium root rot, and Fusarium wilt races 1, 5, and 6. W6 26740, W6 26743 and W6 26746 are expected to serve as parental lines in the development of cultivars with improved disease resistance primarily to Fusarium root rot

We prove that the difference between the Bergman and Szeg? projections on a bounded, pseudoconvex domain (with C ∞ boundary) is smoothing whenever the boundary Laplacian is subelliptic. An equivalent statement is that the Bergman projection can be represented as a composition of the Szeg? and harmonic Bergman projections (along with the restriction and Poisson extension operators) modulo an error that is smoothing. We give several applications to the study of optimal mapping properties for these projections and their difference.

The prevention of the oxidation of L-ascorbic acid in cosmetic emulsions was investigated. First, its stability was tested to determine the optimum ratio, and the effects of changes in the pH, color, and concentration of L-ascorbic acid in the emulsions were investigated. The kinetics of L-ascorbic acid in emulsions were studied through HPLC. The inclusion of glycerine in the dispersion was more effective in maintaining the initial L-ascorbic acid content than the inclusion of propylene glycol, butylene glycol or DI water. A zero-order reaction model best fitted the butylene glycol-in-oil emulsion, whereas a first-order model best fitted the water-in-oil emulsion. A flat-field grazing-incidence grating spectrometer has been installed on the MIT Alcator C-MOD tokamak, following the installation of such a spectrometer on the Livermore electron beam ion trap facility and on the National Spherical Torus Experiment at Princeton. The spectrometer employs a variable space grating with an average spacing of 2400 lines/mm and covers the 10-70 Å wavelength band. It is being used to monitor the presence of impurity ions such as boron, oxygen, fluorine, argon, calcium, iron, molybdenum, and tungsten, and to calibrate spectral diagnostics of astrophysical plasmas. The Alcator instrument provides spectral emission data in a density regime that is one to three orders of magnitude higher than that covered by the other two instruments and thus produces complementary data.

Based on activation measurements with W targets of natural isotopic abundance, the cross sections for thermal neutron capture by W-180 and W-184 have been determined by comparing the activities of W-181 and W-183 after activation with that of W-187. Relative to the known cross sections for capture by W-186, after correction of the latter for changes in the recommended gamma-ray branching intensities, the values of the thermal cross sections have been determined to be 22.7(16) b for capture by W-180 and 1.60(11) b for W-184. The half-life of W-187 was redetermined to be 23.80(3) h.

In water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) double emulsions several irreversible instability phenomena lead to changes. Besides diffusive processes, coalescence of droplets is the main cause of structural changes. In double emulsions, inner droplets can coalesce with each other (W1-W1 coalescence), inner droplets can be released via coalescence (W1-W2 coalescence) and oil droplets can coalesce with each other (O-O coalescence). Which of the coalescence pathways contributes most to the failure of the double emulsion structure cannot be determined by common measurement techniques. With monodisperse double emulsions produced with microfluidic techniques, each coalescence path can be observed and quantified simultaneously. By comparing the occurrence of all possible coalescence events, different hydrophilic surfactants in combination with PGPR are evaluated and discussed with regard to their applicability in double emulsion formulations. When variating the hydrophilic surfactant, the stability against all three coalescence mechanisms changes. This shows that measuring only one of the coalescence mechanisms is not sufficient to describe the stability of a double emulsion. While some surfactants are able to stabilize against all three possible coalescence mechanisms, some display mainly one of the coalescence mechanisms or in some cases all three mechanisms are observed simultaneously.
