This paper analyzes the characteristics of the landscape structures and landacape ecological processes in arid regions of China. Landscape structure is simplicity and homogeneity with the pattern of desert-oasis-river and canal corri- dor. The spatial distribution of landscape heterogeneity mosaics is relatively dependent on water resources. In arid regions, the landscape changes rapidly and extensively because of the sensitive landscape ecosystems and fragile regional ecosystems. For the sustainable development of arid regions, the theories and methods for the eco-environmental construction and the Strategies of ecological construction in the arid regions were proposed in the view of landscape ecology. Keynote subjects of Landscape ecology were also discussed. The paper points out that protecting and increasing landscape diversity and hetero- Geneity are critical to control ecological safety in arid regions.

This paper makes analysis of published articles and books on landscape ecology in the 1990s through literature collection. The analytical results showed that the study of landscape ecology had made a great advance during the past decade in China. By incomplete survey, Chinese researchers at home and abroad published 619 scientific articles and 13 monographs on landscape ecology in the 1990s and most of them (more than 90/100) were published in Chinese with English abstracts. The published articles on basic theory accounted for 39.6/100 (245 articles), and those concerning application and methods accounted for 36.8/100 (228) and 23.6/100 (146), respectively.

Corridors are special patches with narrow and long shape, and often have the functions as transportation, protection, resources and aesthetics. Corridors in the study area can be classified into 8 types, with a total length of 5167.2 km, and corridor density of 1.25 km/km~2. The corridors are mainly composed of irrigation and drainage canals, the total length of which is 2794 km, about 54.1/100 of all the corridors. The corridors have segmented the landscape, and changed the original situation of the natural landscapes. The types of corridors are closely related to the landscape types they are distributed in. Canals are mainly distributed in the wetland landscapes, while roads are mainly in the built-up area. Dikes are always along rivers or coastlines. The corridors are most densely distributed wherever human activity oc- curs most frequently, such as in the artificial wetlands of paddy fields.

Behavioral fragmentation of wildlife habitat is discussed. Using " buffer" module in ARC/INFO, behavioral fragmentation habitat of Red-crowned crane, Saunder's gull, Oriental white stork and siberian white crane was calculated in the Shuangtai-hekou National Reserve, Liaoning province, China. The result showed that breeding Red-crowned crane, Siberian white crane and breeding Saunder's gull are very sensitive to fragmentation factors. Suitable habitat is so little for more than 2000 Saunder's gull to breed.
