It is predicted that under a warming climate, wildfire frequency will likely increase. The increase in fire activity is hypothesized as a likely consequence of increased atmospheric CO2-driven climate warming having the potential to influence fire weather and increase ignition probability. Periods of greenhouse gas-induced global warming have occurred many times in Earth's history, evidenced as episodes of perturbation in climate related proxies within the rock record. Coupled with an extensive record of wildfire in the fossil record dating back ~400 million years, the geological record thus provides an opportunity to aid in our understanding of how past periods of climate change may have altered wildfire activity. This review presents a collation of published records of inferred wildfire activity across some of these episodes of major greenhouse gas-induced warming events in Earth's past, to assess whether a link exists between periods of greenhouse gas-induced climate warming and the increased likelihood of wildfire activity. Within this review, it is concluded that there is substantial evidence of increased combustion products, taken to be indicative of increased wildfire activity, occurring in tandem with periods of global climate changes in Earth's past. These patterns of climate-driven wildfire changes may therefore provide information for our future predictions of wildfire occurrence on a warming planet.

Sponges constitute an abundant and functionally important component of coral reef systems. Given their demonstrated resistance to environmental stress, it might be expected that the role of sponges in reef systems under modern regimes of frequent and severe disturbance may become even more substantial. Disturbances have recently reshaped the community structure of many Caribbean coral reefs shifting them towards a state of persistent low coral cover and often a dominance of macroalgae. Using competition and growth rates recorded from Glover's Atoll in Belize, we parameterise a mathematical model used to simulate the three-way competition between sponges, macroalgae and coral. We use the model to determine the range of parameters in which each of the three species might be expected to dominate. Emergent properties arise from our simple model of this complex system, and these include a special case in which heightened competitive ability of macroalgae versus coral may counter-intuitively prove to be advantageous to the persistence of corals. Importantly, we show that even under scenarios whereby sponges fail to invade the system, inclusion of this third antagonist can qualitatively affect the likelihood of alternative stable states - generally in favour of macroalgal dominance. The interplay between multi-species competition and predation is complex, but our efforts highlight a key process that has, until now, remained unexplored: the extent to which sponges dissipate algal grazing pressure by providing generalist fish with an alternative food source. We highlight the necessity of identifying the extent by which this process takes place in tropical systems in order to improve projections of alternative stable states for Caribbean coral reefs.

Abstract Climate change is one of the top three global threats to seabirds, particularly species that visit polar regions. Arctic terns migrate between both polar regions annually and rely on productive marine areas to forage, on sea ice for rest and foraging, and prevailing winds during flight. Here, we report 21st‐century trends in environmental variables affecting arctic terns at key locations along their Atlantic/Indian Ocean migratory flyway during the non‐breeding seasons, identified through tracking data. End‐of‐century climate change projections were derived from Earth System Models and multi‐model means calculated in two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways: ‘middle‐of‐the‐road’ and ‘fossil‐fuelled development’ scenarios. Declines in North Atlantic primary production emerge as a major impact to arctic terns likely to affect their foraging during the 21st century under a ‘fossil‐fuelled development’ scenario. Minimal changes are, however, projected at three other key regions visited by arctic terns (Benguela Upwelling, Subantarctic Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean). Southern Ocean sea ice extent is likely to decline, but the magnitude of change and potential impacts on tern survival are uncertain. Small changes (<1?m?s?1) in winds are projected in both scenarios, but with minimal likely impacts on migration routes and duration. However, Southern Ocean westerlies are likely to strengthen and contract closer to the continent, which may require arctic terns to shift routes or flight strategies. Overall, we find minor effects of climate change on the migration of arctic terns, with the exception of poorer foraging in the North Atlantic. However, given that arctic terns travel over huge spatial scales and live for decades, they integrate minor changes in conditions along their migration routes such that the sum effect may be greater than the parts. Meeting carbon emission targets is vital to slow these end‐of‐century climatic changes and minimise extinction risk for a suite of polar species.

? 2023 The AuthorsThe growing popularity of Japanese cuisine worldwide has caused an increasing demand for freshwater eels (family Anguillidae), usually termed ‘unagi’ and commonly utilised in sushi and donburi dishes. The trade of the Critically Endangered European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is now restricted and this has resulted in illegal trade. Here, DNA barcoding was used to identify the species of eel sold in processed eel products worldwide, including a focus on Europe and North America. For the first time, traditional jellied and stewed eel products from the UK are also barcoded. A total of 114 novel samples were analysed alongside previously published data to evaluate differences in species composition between locations, over time and in unagi versus more traditional UK eel products. The results revealed more European eel in East Asia than in Europe and more Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) in the UK than East Asia – demonstrating a stark contrast between the native species and those commonly on sale (although variation in product type and eel recruitment influence this). This suggests thousands of food miles are potentially hidden in unagi products. Considering the limitations on export of the European eel, the numbers identified in products outside of its natural range bring into question the legality of supply. An increased prevalence of endangered American eel (Anguilla rostrata) was also shown globally. Future efforts should focus on implementing robust traceability systems, including using genetic methods, to deter illegal trade within the industry.

Plasma angiotensin levels were measured for the first time in a cyclostome, the river lamprey. With the demonstration that angiotensins are present in the circulation, the possibility of a physiological role in the regulation of drinking was re-examined. Angiotensin II and III concentrations and plasma osmolalities were significantly higher in lampreys acclimated to 28 ppt seawater than in those acclimated to freshwater. No changes were found in angiotensin II and III levels 4 h after transfer from freshwater to 50% seawater, although plasma osmolality had started to rise by this time. There was a suggestion that plasma angiotensin II levels might be related to osmolality in the transfer experiment. Injection of AsplVal5- or AsnlVal5-angiotensin II (40-169 JJ.g/kg body wt.) did not stimulate drinking in freshwater- acclimated lampreys, even when they were still capable of drinking. The angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor captopril and the smooth muscle relaxant papaverine both reduced drinking rate in 50% seawater-acclimated lampreys. The data do not provide direct evidence for the involvement of the renin-angiotensin system in the control of drinking behaviour in the lamprey. Indirect evidence from the captopril effect is suggestive, but could have other explanations.

Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT, Thunnus thynnus; Linneaus, 1758) is an ecologically important apex-predator with high commercial value. They were once common off the coast of the United Kingdom (UK), before disappearing in the 1960s. In regions lacking commercial fisheries for ABT, such as the UK and Ireland, spatial data can be scarce. In these cases, sightings and bycatch databases can offset information shortfalls. Here, we document the reappearance of ABT into territorial waters of the UK from 2014 onwards, and increased occurrence off Ireland. We analyse a novel, multi-source dataset comprising occurrence data (2008-2019; 989 sightings and 114 tonnes of bycatch) compiled from a range of sources (scientific surveys, ecotours and fisheries). We show an increasing trend in effort-corrected ABT occurrence in (ⅰ) the pelagic ecosystem survey in the western English Channel and Celtic Sea (PELTIC), (ⅱ) an ecotour operator, and (ⅲ) the Irish albacore fishery in on-shelf and off-shelf waters. Sightings of ABT by the PELTIC correlated with modelled abundance estimates of ABT and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation. These data demonstrate that sightings of ABT have increased off the UK and Ireland since 2014, following the same increasing trend (2010 onwards) as the eastern ABT population.

The intestine of marine teleosts must effectively absorb fluid from ingested seawater to avoid dehydration. This fluid transport has been almost exclusively characterized as driven by NaCl absorption. However, an additional feature of the osmoregulatory role of the intestine is substantial net HCO(3)(-) secretion. This is suggested to drive additional fluid absorption directly (via Cl(-)/HCO(3)(-) exchange) and indirectly by precipitating ingested Ca(2+) as CaCO(3), thus creating the osmotic gradient for additional fluid absorption. The present study tested this hypothesis by perfusing the intestine of the European flounder in vivo with varying [Ca(2+)]: 10 (control), 40, and 90 mM. Fractional fluid absorption increased from 47% (control) to 73% (90 mM Ca(2+)), where almost all secreted HCO(3)(-) was excreted as CaCO(3). This additional fluid absorption could not be explained by NaCl cotransport. Instead, a significant positive relationship between Na(+)-independent fluid absorption and total HCO(3)(-) secretion was consistent with the predicted roles for anion exchange and CaCO(3) precipitation. Further analysis suggested that Na(+)-independent fluid absorption could be accounted for by net Cl(-) and H(+) absorption (from Cl(-)/HCO(3)(-) exchange and CO(2) hydration, respectively). There was no evidence to suggest that CaCO(3) alone was responsible for driving fluid absorption. However, by preventing the accumulation of luminal Ca(2+) it played a vital role by dynamically maintaining a favorable osmotic gradient all along the intestine, which permits substantially higher rates of solute-linked fluid absorption. To overcome the resulting hyperosmotic and highly acidic absorbate, it is proposed that plasma HCO(3)(-) buffers the absorbed H(+) (from HCO(3)(-) production), and consequently reduces the osmolarity of the absorbed fluid entering the body.

Phthalates are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment and are known to adversely affect male reproductive health in mammals through interactions with multiple receptor systems. However, little is known about the risks they pose to fish. This project investigated the effects of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), the most commonly used phthalate, on the reproductive health of male zebrafish (Danio rerio). Males were treated with 0.5, 50 and 5000mg DEHP kga degree 1 (body weight) for a period of 10 days via intraperitoneal injection. The effects of the exposure were assessed by analysing fertilisation success, testis histology, sperm DNA integrity and transcript profiles of the liver and testis. A significant increase in the hepatosomatic index and levels of hepatic vitellogenin transcript were observed following exposure to 5000mg DEHP kga degree 1. Exposure to 5000mg DEHP kga degree 1 also resulted in a reduction in fertilisation success of oocytes spawned by untreated females. However, survival and development of the resulting embryos were unaffected by all treatments, and no evidence of DEHP-induced sperm DNA damage was observed. Exposure to 50 and 5000mg DEHP kga degree 1 caused alterations in the proportion of germ cells at specific stages of spermatogenesis in the testis, including a reduction in the proportion of spermatozoa and an increase in the proportion of spermatocytes, suggesting that DEHP may inhibit the progression of meiosis. In parallel, exposure to 5000mg DEHP kga degree 1 increased the levels of two peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) responsive genes (acyl-coenzyme A oxidase 1 (acox1) and enoyl-coenzyme A, hydratase/3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase (ehhadh). These data demonstrated that exposure to high concentrations of DEHP disrupts spermatogenesis in adult zebrafish with a consequent decrease in their ability to fertilise oocytes spawned by untreated females. Furthermore, our data suggest that the adverse effects caused by exposure to DEHP are likely to occur preferentially via PPAR signalling pathways in the testis and oestrogen signalling pathways in the liver. We found no evidence of adverse effects on zebrafish reproductive health following exposure to the concentrations occurring in most aquatic systems, indicating that DEHP alone may not be a causative agent of the reproductive abnormalities seen in wildlife, at least as a result of short-term exposures.
