In an exploratory survey to R&D managers in different sectors of European Process Industry, the importance and present use of a formal work process for process development has been studied. A new conceptual three-phase model for the "process development process", including the identification of production needs, process development and transfer of results to production, was also tested. The results show that only 44% of the companies in the study presently use a formal work process for process development, but the need for such a process is considered to be high. Good support was given for the new conceptual model as a starting point for further development of a company-specific "process development process"....

The advantages of process models are many. Behavior in groups and organizations is inherently processual in their nature. Group and organizational processes can be converted into process skeletons. Process skeletons can be converted into process functions. These process functions are amendable to more stringent empirical testing. They have advantages over the usual variant models which presume that the processes are independent of the path in a process framework. Conditions for a “hit” or a “miss” in validating a group and organizational theory favor the use of process skeletons.

Process intensification offers the potential to drastically reduce the energy consumption and cost of producing chemicals from both bulk and distributed feedstocks. This review article aims to offer an extensive survey on state-of-the-art process systems engineering (PSE) approaches for process intensification. From both academic and industrial perspectives, this paper provides an overview of the development of various process intensification technologies, specifically those under the categories of separation, reaction, hybrid reaction/separation, and alternative energy sources. A current status analysis in the areas of modeling and simulation is then provided. An indicative list of PSE publications specialized on process intensification is presented to illustrate the progresses made so far towards the deployment of novel process intensification technologies. We also highlight some recent advances for the modeling, design, and synthesis of intensified systems, as well as for the assessment of their controllability/operability/safety performance. Key open questions in these areas include: (i) how to systematically derive intensified designs, and (ii) how to ensure the operability and optimality of the derived intensified structures while delivering their expected functionality.

The article details the basic problems of equipping small-tonnage chemical plants and shows the necessity for developing new designs. The expediency and prospects of development of multifunctional equipment are substantiated and the basic requirements of such equipment are formulated. It is shown that the key element of the solution of the problem is selecting a method of external energy supply for mixing the media being treated. The designs of various types of multifunctional vibratory devices developed are described in detail and their technological and functional features are analyzed.

Usually, for a particular business process different variants exist. Each of them constitutes an adjustment of a reference process model to specific requirements building the process context Contemporary process management tools do not adequately support the modeling of such process variants. Either the variants have to be specified as separate process models or they are expressed in terms of conditional branches within the same process model. Both methods often lead to redundancies making model adaptations a time-consuming and error-prone task. In this article, we discuss selected concepts of the Provop approach for modeling and managing process variants. A particular process variant can be configured at a high level of abstraction by applying a set of well-defined change operations to a reference process model. In particular, this article discusses advanced concepts for the design and modeling of such a reference process model as well as for the adjustments required to configure the different process variants. Altogether, Provop provides a flexible and powerful solution for process variant management.

Abstract Process industries such as textiles, leather and chemicals demand transformation from conventional methods to cope up with the challenges posed due to (i) environmental issues, (ii) adaptability to recent developments in manufacturing, and (iii) cost-competitive market environment. In this regard, potential use of process intensification tools such as ultrasound is being widely studied with broad interest. Ultrasound is useful in different unit operations and processes with benefits of improving process efficiency, optimum use of chemicals, process time reduction, pollution minimization and process-specific benefits. Ultrasound could be effective, in order to facilitate the cleaner/greener process. In the present paper, the application of ultrasound in leather processing, leather auxiliary’s preparation, diffusion through membranes, polymers, chemical reactions, textiles and wastewater treatment has been analyzed and reviewed along with the theory and practice of ultrasound with 200 references including recent publications. Use of ultrasound in leather processing steps is as follows: vegetable tanning, dyeing and fatliquoring provided significant enhancements and diffusion rate. In leather auxiliary’s preparation, solid–liquid extraction (vegetable tannins and natural dyes) from plant materials give improvements in mass transfer enhancement and %yield as an eco-friendly approach. 7E’s concept for balanced rationale for deployment of ultrasound system for process industries has been explained for the first time.Graphical Abstract

During the last years a new generation of process-aware information systems has emerged, which enables process model configurations at buildtime as well as process instance changes during runtime. Respective model adaptations result in a large number of model variants that are derived from the same process model, but slightly differ in structure. Generally, such model variants are expensive to configure and maintain. In this paper we address two scenarios for learning from process model adaptations and for discovering a reference model out of which the variants can be configured with minimum efforts. The first one is characterized by a reference process model and a collection of related process variants. The goal is to improve the original reference process model such that it fits better to the variant models. The second scenario comprises a collection of process variants, while the original reference model is unknown; i.e., the goal is to "merge" these variants into a new reference process model. We suggest two algorithms that are applicable in both scenarios, but have their pros and cons. We provide a systematic comparison of the two algorithms and further contrast them with conventional process mining techniques. Comparison results indicate good performance of our algorithms and also show that specific techniques are needed for learning from process configurations and adaptations. Finally, we provide results from a case study in automotive industry in which we successfully applied our algorithms.

Purpose Many organizations struggle to achieve their desired levels of business process flexibility and support. However, these two capabilities conflict with each other and different tradeoffs have to be made. In this paper, the authors analyze different process conceptualizations and discuss their implications. The authors argue that the conceptualizations people adopt to think (conceptualize) about business processes affect the way they model them, which in turn result in different flexibility-support tradeoffs. Design/methodology/approach A set of properties is proposed to compare process conceptualizations: dominant concept, contract, and existential and representational properties. Using these properties, several process conceptualizations are analyzed and integrated in a comparison chart, which highlights different flexibility-support tradeoffs. The storytelling method is adopted to support the analytic process. Findings The authors show how different process conceptualizations result in different flexibility-support tradeoffs. The authors suggest that we need to intervene on a set of properties of process conceptualizations to achieve different flexibility-support tradeoffs. Research limitations/implications This research contributes to understanding the relationships between process conceptualizations, process modeling, and the flexibility-support tradeoff. A comparison chart helps organizations analyze their desired levels of flexibility and support using a set of properties. Originality/value The extent of covered viewpoints makes this study unique in the process management field. Such effort provides a contribution towards a more multidisciplinary discussion of process models, which integrates different process conceptualizations.

Requirements capture is arguably the most important step in software engineering, and yet the most difficult and the least formalized one [Phalp and Shepperd 2000]. Enterprises build information systems to support their business processes. Software engineering research has typically focused on the development process, starting with user requirements-if that-with business modeling often confused with software system modeling [Isoda 2001]. Researchers and practitioners in management information systems have long recognized that understanding the business processes that an information system must support is key to eliciting the needs of its users (see e.g., Eriksson and Penker 2000]), but lacked the tools to model such business processes or to relate such models to software requirements. Researchers and practitioners in business administration have long been interested in modeling the processes of organizations for the purposes of understanding, analyzing, and improving such processes [Hammer and Champy 1993], but their models were often too coarse to be of use to software engineers. The advent of ecommerce and workflow management systems, among other things, has led to a convergence of interests and tools, within the broad IT community, for modeling and enabling business processes. In this article we present an overview of business process modeling languages. We first propose a categorization of the various languages and then describe representative languages from each family.
