The study focuses on several issues that affect methodological rigour of mixed research. The article aims at providing illumination and clarity on continued use of terminologies in mixed research in a confusing manner. Research paradigms should conduct from time-to-time inward introspection to ascertain quality of research papers. This article attempts to ascertain quality of published mixed research. The article investigates several dimensions of quality in mixed Human Resource Management (HRM) research and then gives recommendations to improve research practice. It dwells on ignored issues in quality of mixed research such as conceptual and theoretical framework, catapulting them to the high table of quality discourse in mixed research. As a pivotal divergence from previous studies, traceability as an integral mixed research quality dimension is given prominence. This article utilises quantitative and qualitative document review guides to collect data from published journal papers in HRM. The study found that there are areas of improvement in the conduct of mixed HRM studies and proposes a framework that can act as a guide in evaluating quality criteria. Mixed research is marginalised in HRM literature owing to the small percentage of published papers.

Integration of qualitative and quantitative data in mixed methods research generates confirmed, discordant, and expanded findings. Guidance is available about the methods and strategies for the meaningful integration of data. However, little has been written about strategies for managing discordant findings in mixed methods. This paper describes and illustrates practical strategies for managing and integrating discordant findings in mixed methods analyses based on researchers reflections and experiences of managing and integrating discordant findings in convergent and sequential exploratory mixed methods studies. Two strategies, namely, comprehensive case and variable analysis and sociocultural exploration are proposed. Comprehensive case analysis involves identifying discordant findings in quantitative data, identifying supportive data in qualitative data, and selecting variables for mixed analysis and interpretation. Sociocultural exploration comprises qualitative code and quantitative data matrix for themes, identification of discordant findings under each theme, and development of sociocultural profile. Identifying and addressing discordant findings in mixed methods is an essential step of rigorous mixed methods analysis. The comprehensive case and variable analysis and sociocultural exploration strategies emphasize the need to examine discordance in data at an early stage of analysis. Further use and evaluation of these strategies are warranted to expand the body of knowledge about practical methods of mixed methods data analysis.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate application of a new framework, the validation framework (VF), to assist researchers in evaluating mixed research studies. Based on an earlier work by Dellinger and Leech, a description of the VF is delineated. Using the VF, three studies from education, health care, and counseling fields are evaluated. The three mixed research studies differed in design and implementation. Elements of the VF were examined and evaluated for each study, and a picture of the quality of each study was captured textually. In presenting the VF and its potential for practical application in evaluating mixed research studies, pragmatic researchers can use this tool to increase the quality of their evaluations of mixed research studies.

The utilization of mixed methods in prehospital research is relatively new. Its use may enhance research findings, but it is not without its challenges. This study used online databases to systemically search for literature relating to the application of mixed methods in prehospital research, in order to understand the place of mixed methods research in the prehospital setting. The prehospital field appears to be embracing mixed methods as an approach to research due to its ability to address he

Mixed methods single case research (MMSCR) is research in which single case experimental and qualitative case study methodologies, and their accompanying sets of methods and techniques, are integrated to answer research questions that concern a single case. This article discusses the historical roots and the distinct nature of MMSCR, the kinds of knowledge MMSCR produces, its philosophical underpinnings, examples of MMSCR, and the trustworthiness and validity of MMSCR. Methodological challenges relate to the development of a critical appraisal tool for MMSCR, to the team work that is involved in designing and conducting MMSCR studies, and to the application of mixed methods research synthesis for multiple case studies and single case experiments.

This article identifies and unpacks three key decision points in a systematic mixed research synthesis, a mixed methods approach to research synthesis. The research community has increasingly recognized the value of synthesis studies in expanding our understanding of phenomena. Mixed-methodology broadly has also gained ground as a pragmatic approach to research investigations. By leveraging mixed methods approaches in a synthesis review, systematic mixed studies review (SMSR) enables a broad and integrated summary of existing research on the topic. Yet SMSRs can be challenging to undertake given the complexity of working with research synthesis and mixed methods requirements. This methods guidance article presents information to assist novice researchers in navigating these critical decisions in SMSRs, and provides examples of how these were addressed by researchers in the two case studies provided. Implications of the SMSRs for the research community and future research directions are also discussed.

Mixed methods research (MMR) involves the application of both quantitative and qualitative approaches in a single study, and has been advocated for physiotherapy research. MMR studies are considered to be useful in cases where several different but related research questions are examined or when the purpose is to triangulate quantitative and qualitative data addressing one research question. Few MMR studies have been published in physiotherapy journals, and no papers are found to discuss the actual experience of conducting an MMR study. In this paper an MMR study is used to exemplify how a study applying a concurrent triangulation design was performed, and some aspects related to performing MMR are discussed. Some challenges are identified, and questions are raised about how to incorporate the findings of the two data sets and which skills are needed for doing MMR.

This article offers a conceptual discussion of a series of qualitative and quantitative research endeavors that share common underpinnings and purpose. The article demonstrates several commonalities between approaches with the hope of encouraging readers to allow research questions to guide methodological choices and avoid overemphasizing division between research paradigms. The current work offers an extension of ideas previously published in Human Resource Development Review (Newman & Hitchcock, 2011) to address a call to explore aspects of theory-building in the context of research methods (Reio, 2010). Specific ideas discussed here focus on commonalities between quantitative and qualitative work when dealing with the broad notion of generalization, and include 1. connections between transferability, probabilistic generalization, naturalistic generalization, and external validity; 2. commonalities between multiple (or collective) case studies and meta-analyses; and 3. phenomenological perspectives and probability.

Abstract The desire by students and researchers to engage in interdisciplinary research has forced many of them to adopt mixed method research. A combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches/paradigms enables the researcher to tap into the strengths of each as well as minimizing the weaknesses of both in a single study. A paradigm dictates the opinions, assumptions and beliefs a researcher holds about the world around them and their view of what constitutes knowledge and truth. Opposing views about the nature of knowledge (epistemology), the role of values (axiology) and the nature of reality (ontology) caused emergence of the paradigms. The types of assumptions and practices held by individual researchers often leads a researcher taking on a qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods approach in their research study. The School of Continuing and Distance Education formerly School of Open and Distance Learning offers a Masters Degree and PhD in Project Planning and Management. Due to the multi-faceted issues investigated by the graduate students, majority of them opt to adopt mixed method approaches in their research work. However, a review of some of the graduate proposals has shown a lack of understanding among the students on the coherence between mixed method paradigm and the designs emanating from this paradigm. The purpose of this paper is to review mixed method research and mixed method approaches in a simple and systematic manner. The paper will identify different types of mixed method designs based on weighting and timing. Finally, the paper will end by recommending pertinent questions that a researcher needs to ask themselves before embarking on a mixed method study.
