Measurement of visual quality is of fundamental importance for numerous image and video processing applications, where the goal of quality assessment (QA) algorithms is to automatically assess the quality of images or videos in agreement with human quality judgments. Over the years, many researchers have taken different approaches to the problem and have contributed significant research in this area and claim to have made progress in their respective domains. It is important to evaluate the performance of these algorithms in a comparative setting and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of these methods. In this paper, we present results of an extensive subjective quality assessment study in which a total of 779 distorted images were evaluated by about two dozen human subjects. The “ground truth” image quality data obtained from about 25 000 individual human quality judgments is used to evaluate the performance of several prominent full-reference image quality assessment algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, apart from video quality studies conducted by the Video Quality Experts Group, the study presented in this paper is the largest subjective image quality study in the literature in terms of number of images, distortion types, and number of human judgments per image. Moreover, we have made the data from the study freely available to the research community . This would allow other researchers to easily report comparative results in the future.

This paper describes a newly-created image database termed as the NITS-IQA database for image quality assessment (IQA). In spite of recently developed IQA databases, which contain a collection of a huge number of images and type of distortions, there is still a lack of new distortion and use of real natural images taken by the camera. The NITS-IQA database contains total 414 images, including 405 distorted images (nine types of distortion with five levels in each of the distortion type) and nine original images. In this paper, a detailed step by step description of the database development along with the procedure of the subjective test experiment is explained. The subjective test experiment is carried out in order to obtain the individual opinion score of the quality of the images presented before them. The mean opinion score (MOS) is obtained from the individual opinion score. In this paper, the Pearson, Spearman and Kendall rank correlation between a state-of-the-art IQA technique and the MOS are analyzed and presented.

The visual quality evaluation is one of the fundamental challenging problems in image processing. It plays a central role in the shaping, implementation, optimization, and testing of many methods. The existing image quality assessment methods centered mainly on images altered by common distortions while paying little attention to the distortion introduced by color quantization. This happens despite there is a wide range of applications requiring color quantization as a preprocessing step since many color-based tasks are more efficiently accomplished on an image with a reduced number of colors. To fill this gap, at least partially, we carry out a quantitative performance evaluation of nine currently widely-used full-reference image quality assessment measures. The evaluation runs on two publicly available and subjectively rated image quality databases for color quantization degradation by considering their appropriate combinations and subparts. The evaluation results indicate what are the quality measures that have closer performances in terms of their correlation to the subjective human rating and prove that the selected image database significantly impacts the evaluation of the quality measures, although a similar trend on each database is maintained. The detected strong trend similarity, both on individual databases and databases obtained by a proper combination, provides the ability to validate the database combination process and consider the quantitative performance evaluation on each database as an indicator for performance on the other databases. The experimental results are useful to address the choice of appropriate quality measures for color quantization and to improve their future employment.

Image quality is important not only for the viewing experience, but also for the performance of image processing algorithms. Image quality assessment (IQA) has been a topic of intense research in the fields of image processing and computer vision. In this paper, we first analyze the factors that affect two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) image quality, and then provide an up-to-date overview on IQA for each main factor. The main factors that affect 2D image quality are fidelity and aesthetics. Another main factor that affects stereoscopic 3D image quality is visual comfort. We also describe the IQA databases and give the experimental results on representative IQA metrics. Finally, we discuss the challenges for IQA, including the influence of different factors on each other, the performance of IQA metrics in real applications, and the combination of quality assessment, restoration, and enhancement.

A new technique is developed for no-reference (NR) quality assessment (QA) of JPEG2000 images. Based on the basic activity of general pixels, the proposed measure overcomes the limitations imposed by feature/structure extraction of distorted images. Besides, its structural contentweighted pooling approach involves no parameter and avoids additional procedures and training data for parameter determination. The effectiveness of the proposed measure is demonstrated through its close correlation with subjective quality scores. Besides, the proposed NR quality measure is shown better than the full-reference (FR) quality measure of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), comparable to the FR quality measure of structural similarity (SSIM) index, and quite competitive among the state-of-the-art NR quality measures. With satisfactory performance at reasonably computational expense and with ease of implementation, the proposed technique is proven to be a quality metric of choice for JPEG2000 images.

Presuming that human visual perception is highly sensitive to the structural information in a scene, we propose the concept of structural activity (SA) together with a model of SA indicator in a new framework for no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (QA) in this study. The proposed framework estimates image quality based on the quantification of the SA information of different visual significance. We propose some alternative implementations of SA indicator in this paper as examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the SA-motivated framework. Comprehensive testing demonstrates that the model of SA indicator exhibits satisfactory performance in comparison with subjective quality scores as well as representative full-reference (FR) image quality measures.

No-reference (NR) image quality assessment (QA) presumes no prior knowledge of reference (distortion-free) images and seeks to quantitatively predict visual quality solely from the distorted images. We develop kurtosis-based NR quality measures for JPEG2000 compressed images in this paper. The proposed measures are based on either 1-D or 2-D kurtosis in the discrete cosine transform (DGT) domain of general image blocks. Comprehensive testing demonstrates their good consistency with subjective quality scores as well as satisfactory performance in comparison with both the representative full-reference (FR) and state-of-the-art NR image quality measures.

Image quality assessment (IQA) is one of the constantly active areas of research in computer vision. Starting from the idea of Universal Image Quality Index (UIQI), followed by well-known Structural Similarity (SSIM) and its numerous extensions and modifications, through Feature Similarity (FSIM) towards combined metrics using the multimetric fusion approach, the development of image quality assessment is still in progress. Nevertheless, regardless of new databases and the potential use of deep learning methods, some challenges remain still up to date. Some of the IQA metrics can also be used efficiently for alternative purposes, such as texture similarity estimation, quality evaluation of 3D images and 3D printed surfaces as well as video quality assessment.

Evaluation of noise content or distortions present in an image is same as assessing the quality of an image. Measurement of such quality index is challenging in the absence of reference image. In this paper, a survey of existing algorithms for no-reference image quality assessment is presented. This survey includes type of noise and distortions covered, techniques and parameters used by these algorithms, databases on which the algorithms are validated and benchmarking of their performance with each other and also with human visual system. Image quality assessment is very crucial for certain image processing applications. Images can be distorted from multiple sources like a fault in sensors, camera shake, poor lighting, over-exposure etc. All these distortions reduce the visual quality of images. Assessing the quality of images can be done with the use of a reference image of the same scene or without it. Without the use of reference image, quality assessment is a very difficult task. Machine learning approaches are very common in no-reference image quality assessment. No reference strategies are very useful if the type of distortion is known. Contrast assessment is a very important application in image processing as poor contrast images are difficult for automated image processing. In this paper, we propose a no-reference image quality measure for images with respect to contrast using random forest regression and validate the results using standard datasets. Experimental results on standard datasets show that the proposed method demonstrates promising results when compared to existing no-reference techniques and the proposed method shows high correlation values with human opinion scores.
