The aim of this study is to examine the implications of knowledge collaboration in open innovation and the role of digital technology therein. The paper draws on a survey of manufacturing firms from Italy, Sweden. France and Spain. The results show that knowledge collaboration with external partners has a significant effect on innovation novelty but not on innovation efficiency. In addition, the results show that digital technology moderates the relationship between knowledge collaboration and innovation efficiency but not the relationship between knowledge collaboration and innovation novelty. Overall, this study contributes to the growing discussion about the benefits of adopting digital technologies in open innovation processes by investigating whether and under which conditions knowledge collaboration is beneficial.

Process innovation that increases operational efficiency through a step change improvement in resource utilisation and waste reduction can help boost manufacturing profitability but also offer broader social and environmental benefits. Business owners, though, might be reluctant to make investments in process innovation unless they serve a pure profit motive. While not guided by altruistic intentions, the owners might nonetheless see a strategic benefit in providing their managers with remuneration incentives supported by public commitments to increase innovation effort for more efficient, lean and sustainable operations. We model such a possibility amongst producers controlling the supply of essential complementary components that go into the assembly of competitively produced composite finished goods. We demonstrate the ruinous effect of independent strategic delegation to managers of powerful complementary producers. Instead, collaboration amongst the owners of the complementary producers to establish common managerial incentives can increase innovative effort to raise efficiency that benefits the whole industry supply chain, end consumers, and social welfare. Government-backed voluntary agreements with sector-wide commitments may be helpful in encouraging process innovation to support lean supply chains and sustainability.

Efficient use of energy is an essential aspect of green building development. In order to achieve a more energy efficient society, innovation of solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies is a necessity. Collaboration between innovators is regarded as important for innovation; however, the existing literature has made few attempts to investigate how a collaboration network can affect technology innovation in the context of the solar PV sector. This study aims to fill this research gap. In this study, innovation activities are categorized as exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation. A conceptual framework and a series of hypotheses are proposed from the perspectives of network structure (including direct ties, indirect ties, and network efficiency) and network composition (such as geographical proximity, institutional proximity, and technological proximity). The empirical results show that in the solar PV sector of China, collaboration networks with different kinds of structure and composition can imply diverse effects on exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation. Followed with the derived results, it can be concluded that network collaboration is not always beneficial for PV technology innovation. The research findings could convey useful information to both practitioners and policy-makers to adopt appropriate strategies for promoting effective innovation collaboration.

This paper investigates the impact of university-industry (UI) collaboration on firms' innovation efficiency using a balanced panel of 443 innovative firms in China from 2008 to 2011. An evaluation of firms' innovation efficiency shows that innovative firms do not show consistent performance across the two stages of the innovation process, namely, the R&D stage and the commercialisation stage. The empirical results demonstrate that UI collaboration can be detrimental to a firm's innovation efficiency initially but that the firm can benefit from UI collaboration as engagement deepens. In addition, UI collaboration affects innovation efficiency differently across the two stages once regional institutional factors are taken into consideration. Thus, pertinent policies may be required in order to facilitate UI collaboration and its role in improving innovation efficiency at different stages.

Shifting political interests of government officials stemming from the Provincial Party Congress (PPC) affects the efficiency of urban innovation. In this paper, intra-city collaborative innovation efficiency (CIE) and inter-city CIE were both analyzed. The intra-city CIE among 285 Chinese cities from 2004 to 2018 was estimated using network data envelopment analysis model, with a gravity model utilized to measure inter-city CIE. Based on a fixed-effect model, the relationship between estimated change in CIE and political cycle is revealed from the perspective of PPC. The study finds that across all cities, (1) cyclical fluctuations in CIE synchronize with the timing of PPC. The inter-city CIE is more sensitive to political cycles than that of intra-city. (2) The turnover effect of PPC cannot be equated with leadership transition alone at non-PPC years. Furthermore, heterogeneity analysis identified differential effects of features of government officials and cities on political cycles of urban CIE.

With the tightening of resource constraints and the proposal of the Chinese High-quality Development strategy, innovation-driven has emerged as a new option to balance economic progress with environmental protection. The paper takes Chinese inter-provincial panel data from 2007 to 2017 as a research sample and is based on a spatial Durbin model, investigating the association among green technology innovation (GTI), "green technology-institution" collaborative innovation, and ecological efficiency (EE), while fiscal decentralization is discussed as a moderating factor. According to the results, "green technology-institution" collaborative innovation is positively promoting ecological efficiency and causing spatial spillovers if the economic distance is taken into account. Compared with the single role of green technology innovation, collaborative innovation has a greater role in improving ecological efficiency. Among them, to improve ecological efficiency, it is best to develop green technology innovation and encourage production institutions in a coordinated manner. According to the moderating effect, fiscal decentralization moderates the impact of innovation collaboration on ecological efficiency in a negative way. Therefore, balancing the decentralization of local fiscal expenditures is important to promoting China's ecological efficiency. In addition, China should purposefully promote the degree of synergy between green technology innovation and related institutions for enhancing eco-efficiency.

In this research, we focus on the collaboration efficiency that arises from the research and development (R&D) efforts of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Korea. Many research studies insist on the importance of the effectiveness of collaboration; however, only a few focus on the efficiency. Thus, this study investigates the effect of collaboration and collaboration type in terms of innovation efficiency for SMEs. First, we evaluate and compare the innovation efficiency of collaboration by applying data envelopment analysis-based global Malmquist productivity analysis. Then, we characterized the collaboration typology through cluster analysis and analyzed the features of the configured collaboration types. Finally, we analyze innovation efficiency to evaluate the performance of the collaboration types. More specifically, we examine the stepwise effect of collaboration for the phases of innovation, and we confirmed that collaboration had different effects on R&D and commercialization. Throughout this research, we found that DEA can be applied to innovation management area in the sense of developing collaborated innovation strategies and collaboration modes, in fact we confirm that the innovation efficiency resulting from DEA may generate suitable managerial strategies for collaboration. Also, four collaboration types identified in this study also showed considerably different innovation characteristics and efficiency. In addition, the results imply that differentiated collaboration strategy is required considering the technological intensity. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This article uses a stochastic frontier model to elaborate how academia-industry research and development collaboration and government funding influence the innovation efficiency of industrial enterprises through a panel dataset from 2009 to 2015, including 30 provinces in China. We find that the research institute-industry collaboration promotes innovation efficiency of enterprises, while university-industry collaboration is adversely associated with innovation efficiency. Government funding plays a positive role on innovation efficiency across the board. Next, we divide the sample into three clusters according to enterprises' innovation ability. In the first cluster, which has the least innovation ability, research institute-industry collaboration, university-industry collaboration and government funding have no significant effect on enterprise innovation efficiency. In the second and third clusters, university-industry collaboration exerts a negative impact on innovation efficiency but government funding improves innovation efficiency. At the same time, we investigate the interaction effects of enterprise R&D personnel and academia-industry collaboration and government funding on innovation efficiency. We find some heterogeneity in the full sample and the three sub-samples.

Purpose - This research is aimed at understanding how inter-organizational team members' ability to encode, interpret, retain and recall knowledge can lead to effective supply chain collaboration, resulting in improved firm performance. Using the lens of transactive memory systems (TMS), this research demonstrates the value of knowing who knows what (specialization), is it trustworthy (credibility) and how to retrieve it (coordination) on supply chain firm performance through network collaboration. Design/methodology/approach - The authors used a multi-method approach that includes quantitative survey methodology and a qualitative methodology using semi-structured interviews, In total, 207 survey responses and six semi-structured interviews provided valuable insights into the use of TMS in supply chain relationships. Findings - This study shows that TMS can enable firms to exploit potential benefits of collaboration on network optimization, thus improving the overall efficiency and process innovations. Practical implications - To maintain the efficient use of a firm's assets while suppliers get added or removed from the network, this study's findings suggest that managers should be more knowledgeable of supply chain partners carrying codified knowledge, which can contribute to superior firm performance. Recognizing that when two or more firms collaborate, there are multiple supply chains affected by each decision, it is important that managers carefully assign the specific role of each firm within the supply chain. Originality/value - This research takes a new approach to network optimization by specifically considering how firms work together to share information about their changing networks to allow firms throughout the supply chain to gain greater levels of asset efficiency and process improvement.

Many case studies highlight a positive relationship between regions' innovation performance and the intensity of collaboration among regional organizations. However, few efforts have been made to analyze this relation with quantitative approaches. In addition to a theoretical discussion, the paper presents an empirical investigation on this issue utilizing conditional efficiency analysis and patent co-application data for the Electrics & Electronics industry in 270 German labor market regions. The results show that the relationship between regions' innovation performance and the intensities of regional as well as inter-regional collaboration take the form of an inverted-U shape. Regions with average regional and inter-regional collaboration intensities are found to outperform those characterized by extremely low, high or unbalanced collaboration behavior.
