? 2022 Elsevier LtdThis paper investigates the impact of spousal and own retirement on health in urban China. To identify the causal impact of retirement on the health outcomes of the couple, we exploit the discontinuity in retirement rate at the gender-specific legal retirement ages, and apply a fuzzy regression discontinuity design using data from four waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The estimates suggest that spousal retirement would exert significant influence on an individual's health and health behaviour. We also find that the health effects of spousal and own retirement exhibit different patterns for men and women. Men's self-rated health and subjective well-being tend to be negatively affected by their own retirement, while women's physical and mental health are both positively influenced by the retirement of their husbands. The retirement-induced change in marital bargaining environment may serve as one underlying mechanism for the retirement effects on health.

Despite the important roles that women play in both the workplace and family life, limited literature has examined the health impact of women's labour force status on their spouses. Using data from the China Household Finance Survey (CHFS), this paper estimates how women's retirement affects their spouses' subjective health. To this end, we implement a regression discontinuity design. The results indicate that the retirement of women imposes a negative externality on their husbands' health.

This paper presents evidence on intra-household retirement externalities by assessing the causal effect of spousal retirement on various health behaviors and health status across 19 European countries. We identify partner's and own retirement effects by applying a fuzzy regression discontinuity design using retirement eligibility as exogenous instruments for spousal and own retirement status. We find significant increases in the frequency and intensity of alcohol consumption combined with a significant decrease in moderate physical activities as a response to partner's retirement. In line with the existing literature, we find that own retirement has significant positive effects on engaging in moderate and vigorous physical activities but also leads to a significant increase in the frequency of alcohol intake. Overall, subjective health is negatively affected by spousal retirement and positively by own retirement. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Purpose - This paper aims to explore the effects of two work related identification (occupational and organizational) of school teachers on intention to early retirement (withdrawal) and satisfaction with the occupation and satisfaction with the school. It also seeks the influence of perceived external prestige on withdrawal and satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach - An empirical study was carried out at public schools in Canakkale, Turkey. Data collected from 238 teachers were analyzed. The correlations between identification and organizational prestige, desire for early retirement, and overall satisfaction of teachers were tested with several demographic variables such as age, gender, tenure and union membership. Ordinal logistic regression analysis (OLR) was conducted to reveal probabilistic behavior of response variables on the basis of explanatory variables. Findings - The results show that both categories of identification have reverse effect on intention to early retirement, and both categories have positive effect on job satisfaction. Perceived external prestige has no effect on intention to early retirement and job satisfaction, but it increases satisfaction from the school. Finally, the "self" and the "occupation" were found salient categories for teachers' identification. Originality/value - Identification literature has long been concentrated on organizational level identification. This paper explores the influence of both organizational and occupational categories of identification, comparatively. Being a teacher is seen as a prestigious occupation in Turkey. Findings about identity as a teacher also confirmed that "self" and "occupation" are two main identity references in the Turkish setting.

This paper investigates household decisions in an overlapping generations model in which individual utility depends on a weighted average of consumption of one's peers. In contrast to representative agent economies, the consumption externality generally affects savings and growth rates. The effects critically depend on the rate at which labor productivity changes with age. For a high (low) rate, the externality lowers (raises) the steady state propensity to consume out of total wealth. The optimal allocation can be decentralized by a (reverse) unfunded social security system if the rate of labor productivity decline is high (low). In contrast to discrete time OLG models, the optimal steady state capital income tax is zero, in spite of the externality.
