In spite of interest from many sources, there has probably never been a completely accurate or totally comprehensive published review of all of the world's refractories industries. This market review seeks to give a more general outlook on the global refractories industry. There are still areas of high growth and opportunity within the spectrum of refractories. Synthetic raw materials will continue to be developed and used. There will also be growth of several classes of monolithics such as "shot-creting" and "plastic gunning" along with the equipment and skills to implement them. Insulation products will continue to become increasingly important and more widely utilised.

The physical, chemical composition and service properties of imported monolithic refractory and locally produced refractory lining materials were investigated and compared in this study. The samples were compacted in a standard rammer, cured in air for 24 h and oven dried for 24 h. They were then heated to temperature of 100°C and characterized to determine their refractory properties. These samples were tested for parameters, such as bulk density, porosity, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, refractoriness, permeability, and cold strength. The results obtained indicate that local acidic ramming mass was found to be a good substitute to imported ramming masses due to comparative properties of the former. A fusion temperature of 1620° C was obtained in the local sample which is equivalent to the value obtained for the imported ramming masses. The results of other properties show little or no variation between the locally produced ramming mass and the imported ones.

This investigation reports the effect of magnesia addition on the properties of chamotte (fireclay) refractories. Five compositions were prepared containing 0, 3, 5, 7 and 9 w/o fused magnesia addition. Before mixing, powders were prepared by grinding and milling of fireclay and magnesia refractory bricks to pass through 300 micron. Five samples were prepared for each composition and all samples were shaped using uniaxial pressing as rectangular bar. Sintering was carried out at 1400 ℃ for one hour in air. Characterisation tests were performed including firing shrinkage, bulk density, apparent porosity and flexural strength test at room temperature. Microstructural examination by optical microscopy, and phase analysis by XRD were also carried out. All fused magnesia added samples except for 9 w/o were generally improved physical properties of chamotte refractory. Comparatively, better properties such as higher bulk density, lower porosity, and higher flexural strength were obtained with 3 w/o fused magnesia addition among all samples studied.

This paper shows the trend in steel production worldwide, and in China, from 2000 to 2015 (projected). The revenue of RHI AG from the steel industry is shown to provide an actual comparison with the trend in steel production. A general overview of refractories activities and research worldwide is presented, mainly focused on the major steelmaking countries (China, Japan, India, Europe, United States)- the intent is to give a general sampling of the current popular topics. It is not a detailed survey, given the space limitation, but hopefully it provides a decent overview of the broad scope of refractories activities, R&D topics, various issues/concerns, and maybe suggests some ideas that are worthy of further consideration.

This work aims to benefit from the wide spreaded clay in south Libya with some alumina (Al_2O_3) additions to prepare and characterise mullite-alumina containing refractory ceramics. The starting materials used in this investigation are local raw clay and chemical aluminium oxide (Al_2O_3). Based on a previous geological survey carried out by the industrial research centre (Tripoli), four different clay samples were selected from different locations of the south of Libya. Representative samples of the four selected clays were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis. The four clay samples were used separately together with aluminium oxide to prepare six different batches containing different proportions of alumina from 0 up to 60 percent with an increament of 10 percent. The mullite containing bodies were investigated through their mineralogical compositions using XRD and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) attached with energy dispersive X-ray unit (EDX). The sintering, mechanical and refractory properties of the prepared mullite containing bodies were tested according to the international standard specifications. It is concluded that the densification, mechanical and refractory properties are improved as the alumina content increases on the expense of clay. Mixes containing 60 percent clay: 40 percent alumina and 50 percent clay: 50 percent alumina respectively, especially those prepared from Agar clay are characterised with good sintering, high mechanical and high refractory properties.
