简介

Nigeria's long-awaited National Health Insurance Authority Act (NHIA) was signed into law in May 2022. The law aims to provide universal healthcare coverage in a country where only 3% of the population (Africa's largest) have health insurance. However, plans to pay for some of the scheme through a new tax on phone calls prompted protests from telecommunications operators and users. There are also questions over how Bola Tinubu's election as the president-elect for Nigeria in February 2023 will affect implementation of the law.
