These unique di- and oligo-KDO fragments are found only in bacterial cell walls and do not exhibit significant biological activity. Therefore, they could serve as potential antigens in the development of antibacterial vaccines. However, the possibility that such isolated oligosaccharides could be heterogeneous and/or contaminated with antigenic compounds cannot be excluded. Therefore, the chemical synthesis of these ulosonic acid-containing oligosaccharides would circumvent these issues as they relate to vaccine development. 收起
