Transdermal drug delivery via the skin is a promising method due to its ease of administration. However, there are barriers to delivering drugs through the skin, which can be overcome through the use of various strategies, including nanoparticulate systems. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have recently emerged in the biomedical field, particularly in transdermal drug delivery, due to their unique properties and surface adjustability. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the properties and synthesis of AuNPs for skin delivery studies. It also covers different aspects of AuNPs that affect skin penetration, such as size, surface properties, and shape. Additionally, the review discusses various applications of AuNPs in skin delivery as drug carriers, skin permeation enhancers, and therapeutic agents, and their combination with physical methods for drug delivery. Overall, this review of AuNPs in transdermal delivery and their applications is beneficial for the design and development of AuNPs for skin delivery.
