(Apiaceae). – Sea Holly (Eryngium maritimum) is a polycarpic species, that can reach an age up to 20 years at least. Adulte stage is not reached before the 4th year. Advanced individuals can produce up to 9000 diaspores every year, but not all diaspores are fertile. Fertile diaspores keep their germination ability about several years and form a persistent seed bank in soil. The basic morphological organ is a turnip. When overblown with sand, stem can elongate and promote renewing buds to surface of soil again. In this way a rhizome-like structure is formed, but this structure might not be called rhizome sensu stricto. The leaves are characterized by xeromorphic adaptations. 收起
