The authors, working at University of Melbourne, modelled the Sugar Shake program to estimate its effectiveness as a surveillance tool for Varroa.In Victoria, all beekeepers need to test their colonies for Varroa at least twice each year using a variety of test methods. Approved test methods are drone uncapping, alcohol wash, and the sugar shake test. If varroa were detected, Agriculture Victoriawould immediately start a test and eradication program to check all managed colonies in the vicinity to determine if other managed colonies were also infested.
