Numbers of eggs laid increased directly with bud size (bud length and bud diameter) up to a maximum of 49. The number of additional ovipositor insertions where no eggs were laid ranged from 1 to 14 per bud. The theoretical maximum number of eggs per bud (i.e. actual plus attempts) was estimated to be around 64. Individual scale buds with eggs usually contained a single egg, but up to three eggs was quite common, with a maximum of 13. The number of ovipositor insertions where no eggs were laid ranged from 1 to 6 per scale. Most eggs were laid in whorls 3 and 4 protected and hidden by the outer 2(3) whorls. Eggs were primarily laid in apical flower buds, but smaller, lateral flower and leaf buds were utilised, and at very high adult density a few eggs were discovered inserted into (apical) leaf buds of sweet chestnut in the surrounding coppicewoodland. 收起
