Modern molecular genetic approaches have made it possible to take a closer look at the involvement of neurons of the direct and indirect pathways in various aspects of motor learning. Animal studies have provided evidence that with the critical involvement of the dopaminergic system, direct pathway neurons play a key role in forming and maintaining movements frequently performed in a given context, to the level of taking part in the mechanisms automating these movements, while indirect pathway neurons play a key role in the flexible involvement of particular movements in specific situations. These effects of the activity of the two pathways are probably mediated via their complementary influences on the mechanisms supporting behavioral variability. 收起
