The aim of the expedition was to gather information about the oceans. The voyage to even the remotest corners of the earth lasted three-and-a-half years. When the three-master returned to England in May 1876, it had covered a total of 68,890 nautical miles. The crew had performed almost 300 deep-sea soundings, around 250 deep-sea temperature measurements and just as many investigations using trawling nets. 收起
