The resistance of different Vitis spp. materials to Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. herbemontis was evaluated in a naturally infected field in 1989/90 and under controlled conditions during the 1990/91 growing seasons. Resistance among rootstock cultivars was variable, hybrids of V. riparia X V. berlandieri (SO4, 5A, Kober 5BB, 420A, 161-49, 240 Ru and Solferino) and V. riparia X V. rupestris (101-14, 3309 and Schwarzmann) were susceptible to this soil borne disease. Hybrids of V.berlandieri X V. rupestris (Paulsen 1103, R99 and R110) showed intermediate resistance. Rootstocks of the two first groups were the most common material planted in this region. Today Paulsen 1103 is the best option for planting. Other materials, such ascv. Isabella and some V. vinifera X V. rotundifolia hybrids were resistant to this fungus.
