Plant regeneration systems were established for all genotypes tested. Embryogenic callus was initiated from seedling sections that included the shoot apex part on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 5.0 mg . l(-1) 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 3.0% sucrose and 0.8% agar in the light. The culture response was dependent on the genotype. In particular, embryogenic calli were only formed by 'Super-Green-Belt' and 'Wide-Green' explants but not by cultures initiated from the other two cultivars. Regeneration from embryogenic calli occurred on four media, and the best regeneration response (63.8%) was observed on half-strength MS media supplemented with 1.0 mg . l(-1) GA(3) and 1.0 mg . l(-1) kinetin. Alternatively, plant regeneration from nodular callus was observed in cultures on media with low concentrations of 2,4-D from all the cultivars tested and without transfer to regeneration medium.
