Nevertheless, we are still faced with diseases that make our lives as beekeepers difficult. One such disease is American foulbrood (AFB). We need to look to reducing the spread of disease to ensure our industry continues to thrive. But how do we best do that? How do we stop AFB spreading? Is there anything you can do that will actually help?Research is being conducted into how our practices as beekeepers affect the spread of AFB. Is it more important for you to inspect your hive regularly or should you reduce the number of times you move equipment between your hives? Is it better to introduce a barrier management system or is it more helpful to be aware of the signs and symptoms of disease? The answer is probably all of these, but with limited resources, this research will provide bee biosecurity officers, state agricultural departments and us as beekeepers with valuable insight into which aspect of a beekeeper's behaviour should be targeted to achieve the greatest result.
