Estimation of the amount of nitrogen in wood ranges in percentage dry weight from 1 to 5 % in the cambium to 0.05% to 0.3% in the sapwood (Merrill and Cowling 1966, Haack and Slanksyl987). Various studies have shown that reproductive success of scolytine bark beetles is correlated to nitrogen levels in the cambium (Vega and Hofstetter 2015).French and Roeper (1973) showed that broods of Anisandrus (Xyleborus) dispar F. reduced the amount of dry weight nitrogen in sapwood of Malus sylvestris from 0.34% to 0.18%. Using a defined agar-based in vitro medium for A. dispar, it was observed that successful brood development occurred with L-asparagine as a nitrogen source at a minimum level of 0.1 and 1.0% dry weight nitrogen. Using acetylene reductase method on these in vitro cultures, nitrogen fixation was not recorded. 收起
