Knipe compiled three series of small-scale geological maps of the British Isles,which were published in at least ten editions and more than fifty separate issues, spanning a forty-six year period from 1835 to 1881. With the exception of the Geological Survey, Knipe was the most prolific geological map publisher of mid-nineteenth century Britain. He also produced several topographic maps, engravings and professional reports, and contributed geological communications to the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Despite this remarkable output, Knipe remains one of the least well-documented figures of early British geology. Widely known, though largely unacknowledged by his peers, he made a precarious living on the fringe of geological society, as an itinerant mineral surveyor and compiler and seller of geological maps. 收起
