If DSB left unrepaired, such damage can result in loss or rearrangement of genomic DNA, leading to cell death or carcinogenesis. DSBs are induced by ionizing radiation, but they also arise from endogenous processes, including DNA replication (1, 2), V(D)J recombination (3), and meiotic recombination (4).
