It looks deep... 展开 Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to reveal the importance of Intercultural Communication in the process of adaptation in a new culture. The research focuses on Chinese migrants in the capital of Ghana, Accra. It looks deeper into the differences or similar culture values shared by both cultures, which may aid in adaptation. Furthermore, it studies factors such as language barrier, stereotypes, ethnocentrism, etc. as barriers to effective intercultural communication between cultures. The role played by the host culture to ensure successful adaptation by Chinese migrants, is also assessed in the paper. Finally, effective strategies are proposed in the paper to help overcome issues encountered during adaptation. Design/Method: A mixed research method is used in this research to collate data from both Chinese migrants and locals. Two sets of questionnaires were prepared for both migrants and locals. Interviews with locals and Chinese migrants were also conducted. Observations by the researcher are analysed and used to support the findings. The use of the word migrants or sometimes sojourners, includes both Chinese long stay residents and short stay visitors in Accra. Findings: It is found that although both countries share some values, they are sometimes interpreted differently. Very little socialisation is done by both locals and Chinese. Consequently, very little information on culture is known by both cultures. Contribution: Through the research it was observed that minimal research has been conducted in intercultural communication studies between China, Ghana and Africa as a whole. Consequently, this paper takes the opportunity to provide an insight on China and Ghana intercultural communication, and shared values. 收起
