This i... 展开 Microwave remote sensing of rough surfaces, using data obtained from moving platform and ground-based measurements, has stimulated the need for a better understanding of the interaction of radar signals with these surfaces. This interaction is particularly important for the ocean surface where the modulation of the like and cross polarized radar returns can yield information about the long ocean wave field (swell and ship wakes). Theories used to interpret these measurements adopt Two-scale models of the rough surface (Wright, 1968). The radar modulation is considered to be principally due to (1) tilt of a synthetic aperture resolution cell by the long ocean waves and (2) the straining of the short waves (by hydrodynamic interaction) (Keller and Wright, 1975; Alpers and Hasselman, 1978). For application to moving platforms, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Side Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR), this modulation needs to be described in terms of a general three dimensional geometry for both the like and cross polarizations, since the long ocean waves travel in arbitrary directions.
