The design of transmission lines requires that the strength of the various components be coordinated. A strength factor phi, related to the target coordination of strength or sequence of failure of the various components, was introduced in the general design equation. A method to derive the value of phi was developed. Phi values depend on the target probability of achieving the preferred sequence of failure. This method takes the random nature of the components' strength into account. The phi values for a confidence level of 90 percent were derived for different dispersions of component strength. 收起
