These satellite observations fall into two general categories: 1) Imagery at various wavelengths - primarily the visible and middle infrared; and 2) Multispectral radiances observed simultaneously in the same field of view and interpreted in terms of the vertical distribution of temperature. There are also variants of these two general techniques and additional spectral regions now coming into use which allow an expanding number of atmospheric parameters to be observed from space. These parameters include three-dimensional cloud structure, three-dimensional field of temperature, water vapor, winds, liquid and solid water and aerosols. How well can we measure there parameters with today's technology and interpretative techniques. Do we have hope for determining all the necessary quantities for global numerical weather forecasting from satellite platforms. Can we provide the required data for mesoscale specification and forecasting. Or will we always require ground based observations as well as satellite observations to totally specify the atmosphere and initialize our prediction model. What role can active systems (Lidar and Radar) play in satisfying these requirements. These questions are explored in this presentation as the current state-of-the-art in remote sensing is analyzed.
