This guide consolidates existing and new guidance into an up-to-date, single-source document for use by USAF helicopter pilots. If approved by HQ USAF Instrument Flight Center (IFC), portions of this guide will be incorporated into AFM 51-37. The paper first discusses the need for consolidated guidance, unique helicopter characteristics requiring changes to instrument procedures and how airspace design has been adjusted to accommodate helicopter operations. It then outlines procedures for performing basic helicopter instrument flight, and concludes with a chronological approach to helicopter instrument mission planning and accomplishment.
