The index was... 展开 We have developed a Relative Moisture Index (RMI) that is designed to separatethe moisture information in the TOVS water vapor channels from the temperature information that, in many situations, dominates the signal. The index was designed to avoid the use of radiosonde moisture measurements because of the inherent problems with the measurements. We have demonstrated the ability of the RMI to successfully extract the moisture information from the radiance measurements. For channel 12, the RMI extends the moisture information to the mid-latitude and polar regions. For channel 10, the RMI makes the extraction of moisture information possible. Both situations have been demonstrated with case studies. It is particularly important to note that, while increases of water vapor and temperature tend to occur together and produce opposing effects in the water vapor channel measurement, the RMI separates the two effects and enhances the water vapor signal. 收起
