This work investigates the potential recovery of phase maps from pure irradiance measurements, even when the geometric optics approximation becomes invalid. Synthetic phase screens generated from a modified Kolmogorov refractive index spectrum are first used to test reconstruction methods based on the geometric optics approximation, corresponding to a Poisson problem without known boundary conditions. Edge effects due to the boundary issue are shown to result in low spatial order errors whose severity depends on the ratio of the domain size to the outer scale. Finite propagation effects are also investigated and shown to cause degradation of high frequency phase retrieval when l_0~2/λz＜1. To improve upon the geometric optics retrieval, a wave optics adjoint optimizer is introduced based on linearization of the paraxial wave equation. We demonstrate a successful monotonic reduction of the irradiance cost function using this approach and accelerate convergence by using the geometric optics solution as an initialization. Recovery of high frequency phase content is demonstrated up to a Rytov number of ～ 0.1, which was the highest investigated in this work. 收起
