The black, carbonaceous deposits increase the risk of operational problems and component failure. This study presents an investigation into the sensitivity to temperature of the coking induction time of Mobil DTE 732, a turbine oil. In each test, 400 mL of test oil circulate at a flow rate of 10.4 mL/min through a heated tube that is maintained at a constant temperature over time. The system was purged with nitrogen to study the breakdown due to temperature alone. As the oil degrades, the solid deposits form and attach to the heated surface. The time required for the deposits to start forming, or the induction time, is determined using bulk oil and surface temperature measurements. The tests reported had maximum surface temperatures that spanned from 450℃ to 533℃. The tests confirmed the strong influence that surface temperature has on oil life, as an increase in surface temperature exponentially decreased the induction time. The ratio of activation energy to ideal gas constant was calculated based on the data collected. 收起
