Coking affects nozzle passages and spray patterns drastically reducing heat transfer rates, nonuniform combustor wall temperature distributions and an overall increase in thermal stresses to gas turbine components that could potentially cause catastrophic failure. This study seeks to characterize high temperature fuel coking as well as to test the effectiveness of frangible coatings as mitigation technique utilizing a novel test apparatus based on the test methods referenced in. Test temperatures varying from 80 ℃ to 200 ℃ were used to heat airated jet fuel to first characterize the coking process. Subsequently, frangible coated and non-coated test filters were exposed to the coked fuel to test the coating's ability to mitigate coking. Although current aircraft fuel temperatures don't typically exceed 150 ℃, the jet fuel was airated and heated at higher temperatures to accelerate the coking process. 收起
