Simulations found that increasing the windo... 展开 This work demonstrated the use of a PDFA method, MAT299 in LS-DYNA, to investigate the effect of boundary conditions on the damage state of a composite laminate from low velocity impact. Simulations found that increasing the window size on a flat panel LVI fixture increased the compliance of the coupon response and reduced both the inter- and intra- laminar damage of the coupon. In addition, further study revealed that a roller fixture with a single line of contact on the coupon produced less damage than a clamped fixture with the same span. The six inch by six inch roller fixture provided the closest damage state for a flat plate when compared to results from a 2-stringer panel LVI at the same impact energy, 150 in-1bf. The six inch by six inch roller supported flat panel still had significantly more damage than what was seen in the 2-stringer panel, however the process demonstrated could be used to find a representative flat panel test fixture that matches the 2-stringer damage state and response. Comparing the flat panel and 2-stringer results emphasizes the fact that current flat panel LVI test methods do not provide damage states representative of what is seen when testing configured structure, limiting the usefulness of the flat panel tests. As such, improvements need to be made to standard flat panel LVI test methods to increase applicability. Benefits of method improvement include increased CSAI allowables resulting in a less conservative design and decreased weight of structure. While this would be expensive to complete experimentally, the use of PDF A methods, similar to what was presented in this work, provide a cost effective alternative. In order for this approach to be implemented, extensive test data is needed to validate the simulation methodology and damage predictions before improvements to the experimental test method and fixtures can be made. 收起
