It will con-tribute to well-to-wheel and life cycle CO_2 neutral on-road mobility solutions hence will become a backbone element to meet EU CO_2 neutrality targets. Complementary to the already initiated electrification, H_2 can be used as a sustainbale fuel in fuel cell appli-cations as well as for H_2 engines.Within the joint project “H_2 ICE Democar”, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, a consortium of industry companies and scientific institutions determine key requirements for a H_2 engine hybrid powertrain in a light commercial vehicle. Due to the carbon-free fuel, this innovative technology combines CO_2-free operation, potential for zero-impact exhaust emissions with long driving range, fast refueling at high thermal H_2 engine efficiency.This paper focuses on mini-mization of tailpipe emissions by optimizing the combustion system to reduce engine-out emissions and by developing a tailored H_2 exhaust gas treatment system (EGT). Already the first investigations indicate five times lower NO_x and nearly 100 % reduc-tion of HC and CO_2 engine-out emissions at the most unfavourable engine operation conditions (e.g. peak power) when compared to the fully optimized gasoline engine. Furthermore, CFD and dyno test results reveal the potential of Jet Guiding Caps to further enhance mixture homogenization and reduce engine-out NO_x emissions by up to five times. In spite of challenging package conditions, the selected exhaust gas treatment system features high H_2 and NO_x conversion rates over the entire engine map. In summary, the presented results underline the potential of the selected power-train concept to minimize engine-out emissions at high engine efficiency. Combined with a dedicated H_2 EGT-system very low tailpipe emissions can be achieved. 收起
